Those are some great photos in that article. I went thru U-505 at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry (http://www.msichicago.org/whats-here/exhibits/u-505/)a few years back. Besides being so cramped and not well-lit for photos (if it was even allowed), one would need an ultra-wide angle lens for most of those cramped compartments.

Been to the U-995 at Laboe. Its interior was redone for the Norwegian navy and thus is more typical of the 1950's Cold War era than the Second World War. She has two large holes cut into her hull to accommodate tourists. She sits right on a beach of the Baltic, exposed to the elements and the salt air. So, if you want a more authentic WWII experience, the U-505 in Chicago is a better specimen. If you haven't been there since it's been moved indoors, it's worth the trip.
Still and all, there's a fine museum and naval memorial at Laboe (just outside of Kiel) where the sub is located, and it's also worth a visit if you're in Schleswig- Holstein.

There are 16 WWII era submarines on display at various museums throughout the United States. I toured the USS Drum (SS-228) in Mobile, AL two weeks ago. Her interior is in great shape for her age and the number of people that tour her every year.
I didn't realize there were that many! I wish one was from the Tambor class, or even beater, one of the Sugar S boats. I new a man that was on one in the early part of the war, they did operational patrols out of Australia.

The U.S. WWII era subs that are on display are of the Gato, Balao and one Tench class.
Yes I know. To bad though. In fairness, the S Boats that survived the early war, were pretty much used up for training. Since the Tambor class lost seven of the 12 built, it is not surprising none survive! Still, would have been nice.

Funny film, and some nice shots of the mothballed fleet thrown in. 
Really that is a stunning resource. The amount of time and effort put into Uboat.net is monumental.
