Yeah, if you're really, really, really attached to that hat, have it rebuilt; but in all likelihood, you'll lose some width off the brim. Two sizes is too much for simply stretching it out.

I've hat very little luck stretching a hat beyond a half-size. My local hatter was able to stretch a hat a full size. However, the hat was orginally a 7 1/4" size and it shrunk to just under 7 1/8". He was only stretching back to its original size.

another newbie with a borsolino here to tap all y'all's expertise....
so the question is, what is it?
i bought this new at a seattle hatshop in the early 90's... i seem to recall they said it was beaver fur, other than that i have no idea of the details of this hat...
does the hidden tag possibly indicate it was made in 1982?
& what or who is mogano?
anyways, thanks for any info you can provide!

I think your date is correct, but the beaver thing was likely a salesman just selling some blue sky.

Mogano is a wood and in Italy is used to define a shade of brown.
Your Borsalino is really good.
May I see others pictures from some others angles?
I can't say for sure about the materials that seems to me a fur felt pretty shaggy and medium hair.

That brown hat is from 1982. Borsalino would date their hats this way until they moved in 1985-85. Then it was a different dating system. That hat is from the old factory .

other than "pimp hat", what do you call the thing? shaggy mahogany italian pimp hat?
seriously tho, i have a thing for details & would love to know the most appropriate way to refer to this hat, does it fall into any specific style categories or anything?
if y'all couldn't tell, i'm thinking of selling, so now of course we have the obvious question, is there any way to estimate the value?

It's a long hair soft felt with a natural (not uniformly clipped) finish. If you use a bit of steam and brush with the nap (counter clockwise) it will look a bit less shaggy. As mentioned it's from the old factory so high quality. It has a desired form, unique color / finish, and is in very good condition. Size 7 1/4 is more common so there will be more competition. I am not interested in putting a price on it so I will leave that to others.

It is possible that the salesman used the words beaver finish to describe the hat.

Echter Borsalino, size Point 6 1/2, near Mint condition, date stamped 17.5.29 (May 17, 1929). The felt is very soft / light weight with a unique box bow design for this style hat and also has a wind cord. It has an fantastic over welt curled brim and the non-reed sweatband is very finely stitched to the hat. I was able to take a photo of the paper label which has a hand written Point size and the words "Bismuto" (Bismuth) and "Sanboca" (?). This a the same model / seller as the previous Point 5 1/2 size Max Eckard Echter Borsalino.
