Partly why I started the "show me your fit pic" thread was to find inspiration for this Charles! (But then it dawned on me that most of the jackets in it would be existing repros :( )

To summarize, many suggestions have been for 3/4-length jackets in horsehide or goatskin and preferably without a belt. The Monarch is such an example, and although it's one of the simpler jackets posted here, judging from the number of re-posts, it's also the most popular so far. I wouldn't dismiss it so fast. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. And if your goal is to sell jackets, it's best to remember another old saying: the customer is always right.

Finally, and I can't stress this enough, copy an actual jacket, not a picture. Proportions are important in a jacket and you can't know the proportions exactly just from a picture. Also, fit is the most important part of a jacket, and fit can't be properly communicated by a picture. The old jackets didn't just look different, they fit different, and to make a true reproduction, you must copy both the look and the fit. So while these ideas can inspire you, I would prefer you just cruise eBay for a sweet old jacket that meets your criteria and copy it stitch-for-stitch.

And I vote for veg-tanned, aniline-dyed goatskin.

That last one is fantastic, I love the button up Lancer type front. An early aviation type jacket like that has been on my wish list for awhile now.

Well, looks as if this is dying a fast death ...

I think the trouble is that there is almost infinite choice and getting a consensus under that is virtually impossible. It would be better I think to approach it from the other end. Have Buzz Rickson propose maybe two styles they could produce and have the forum then vote on those. Maybe with possibly small amounts of customization to make it more unique to TFL?

Can think of few things worse than design by committee, it just irons out eccentricity, creativity and all the other things that can make a jacket interesting.

I'm sorry I never realized until reading this that your "fit" post was about this project. Thank you for the efforts!

I agree with you, devilish. Going in, I knew this was likely to end up as it has, hence my continued use of verbiage and phrases that were open ended such as "if we can agree."

Just as it now sits, there hasn't been enough participation to even come remotely close to ever making a jacket that was exclusive to the forum, so any jacket would have to be a style Buzz would offer to the world, but that doesn't mean we can't all have some input in this. I propose that I'll share with Buzz the many different designs that have been presented here and then allow them to select their two favorites from which they will either attempt to copy or do as most designers do, which is to take inspiration from one or more and create their own concept(s), then I'll present the designs here and those who care to have a voice can express what they like or don't like.

Depending on how many people end up wanting a jacket will determine if we will offer any special accommodations in size, but as I said, if present participation is indicative of the outcome, the size range will be dictated by Buzz and end with a 44 that is either a true 44 or one generous enough to fit a 46" chest measure.

I welcome your continued input and feedback on this project, but for the moment this is not looking as if it's getting beyond that initial surge of adrenaline out of the gate. Thank you.

I wish I had better shots of this jacket (which isn't mine). I like the buttons, lapels, sleeve treatment.
And the rug.

I do, as well. It's definitely German styling as sometimes worn by WWII Luftwaffe fighter pilots. Here it's being depicted in an interesting German skier look of the 1930s as adopted by gebirgsjaeger units: goggles, bergmutze with edelweiss abzeichen, berghosen, snap clip, ski boots and socks, and what appears to be a pin of silver eichenlaub on the lapel.

I don't think I've seen a jacket design yet presented here I didn't like!
