Aero Leather alpaca jacket lining

Yes, I can see you're based in the UK, but it was more a question of which part. The further north you are, the more likely you'll use an alpaca-lined jacket during winter. Personally, with FQHH jackets, I go for a tartan lining and just layer as the weather dictates. That gives me maximum flexibility and use for a jacket, and if it gets really cold, I reach for my Irvin - sheepskin trumps alpaca any day of the week!

I use a B-10 as my day to day cooler weather jacket, some people find it a bit itchy if they wear short sleeves. Never bothered me much.

I have a Hudson with a brown alpaca lining-I bought it as a cold weather jacket to be layered with a decent sweater but have been wearing it on cooler evenings and mornings(circa 55F) with just a cotton long sleeve shirt underneath....After a typical two mile walk in these temperatures I am too warm but confident that it would be great in colder temperatures,which is what I prefer.I don't find the alpaca itchy with a thin cotton layer either . I cant really comment on the thickness as compared with moleskin or cotton but it certainly feels luxurious

I have a Buzz Rickson N-1 with alpaca lining (I've previously had several ELC B-10 and B-15 jackets). I'm in the South of England and the N-1 really only gets significant daytime use from October through to February (or on the occasional cold/wet evening). I wear a shirt and a thin sweater underneath the N-1. The alpaca prevents too much layering. As Sloan says, an Irvin (I have a late war Links jacket now) copes with dry cold conditions.

I own a Teamster with Alpaca lining. The lining itself is not too thick, I would not call the jacket a winter jacket, but more of a fall/early-spring/mild winter jacket. I comfortably wore it at temperatures between 10C and -5C, with a longsleeve at 10C and tshirt+pullover at -5C.
When it got colder than that, staying outside for longer in the Teamster was no longer comfortable, I would switch to my winter jackets then.

Aero HWM 38" brown FQHH with brown Alpaca lining... Great in Germany for about two thirds of the year. During July and August a bit too warm. Of course not as smooth as tartan lining, but tougher!

I used to have a Highwayman with brown alpaca lining. I would say its not very thick but it is warm. I found that it was a great jacket for when it was cooler but I used other jackets when it got warmer. I found the weight of the FQHH a bit much for everyday comfort but I miss the jacket sometimes (having sold it) because of the extra bit of warmth. i think the question of alpaca lining comfort will always be a bit subjective. I would go with Dr H's comment of it being an October through to February lining but you could possibly get away with it apart from the warmest days when you probably wouldn't wear a jacket. I would also add that I didn't wear anything more than a t-shirt/ shirt with it usually.

I had a FQHH Aero HG-5 for a short period of time. Sold it to help fund the 50's HBD. It had Alpaca, and it was great for my trip to the UK. Warm, but not itchy at all. That said, I'd not have it unless I lived somewhere that I could use it in the cold more than I do here (CALI). The Aero I got after this has the heavy Tartan plaid, and it's much more versatile and I think looks nicer overall.

I've got an Aero Halfbelt with the alpaca and it's nice for winter here in Sydney with a brushed cotton (flanelette) shirt underneath.
Gday Benny, I'm looking at one with Alpaca. Originally I was going to go for a funky tartan, but I'm gravitating towards keeping the alpaca, makes for a decent winter jacket. I just have no point of reference for how warm warm is? It's like I had heard heaps about how heavy and stiff the fqhh is, when I got a new one I didn't find it particularly heavy, or overly stiff....this living on the other side of the world has whiskers on it doesn't it? I would love to have a stockist somewhere in Sydney where I could a) try things on, and b) handle the various leathers, linings etc....

Well to be frank mate I do feel the cold - didn't happen when I was younger but now that my 40th year has come and gone I notice the temperature drop real quick! You're no doubt a bigger size than me (mine is a 36) but if you'd like to have a look at it anyway and you're up Sydney way you're very welcome to check it out hands-on. PM me if it's convenient.
Cheers mate, I'm stuck in capital city right now. Minus a hundred Degrees every morning for last 2 weeks. I would actually love a D1 or B6, but for 6 weeks a year, probably not worth it. I will have a crack with the alpaca, I can't imagine I will be sweating at the footy on a Saturday night? The cold sucks, I've had so many years away in tropical climates that I really do feel the cold. Turned 40 last year and the rugby athritis is well and truly here aswell...I'm hoping to move back to Sydney in the next few weeks, so there won't be too many frosts at Manly beach...I hope?

I've got both close friends & relos there Bunyip & yeah, it sure cools down for winter in Canberra! I don't wear my jacket with layering, just a winter weight shirt & for me the alpaca is great. I live out in the wild west of Sydney, will get a few zeros & maybe even a -1 here and there very middle of winter. I guess if you're a lean build the alpaca will be just fine, maybe if you have some more meat on your bones, as my auntie used to say, go for the tartan.

When I bought my first sheepskin, the LW B3, it seemed like a dreadful indulgence, but it's well worth it in practice. I obviously get more wear out of that and the Irvin up here than you would down there, but one sheepskin jacket for six weeks a year is well worth it if you end up living in it for those six weeks....

You are no doubt correct Edward. My situation is that I have finally hocked all my casual jackets, with the usual litany of Ebay rookie errors of "hoping they fit "etc. So I'm starting from scratch again. There are a couple of staples I need in the wardrobe before I go buying sexy shearling!
