My Fed ran smaller than my CD. that's why they told me to order up a size. I'm a 58 and ordered the Fed in 59. I shoulda ordered my CD in 59 too!

I'm thinking about getting a Fed IV. Do they seem to fit true to size?

I like my hat a bit tight ... and I like it to sit a bit high

my CDs started out a little too baggy for me but tightened up nicely over time

my Fed IV was perfect out of the box and has stayed that way

I'm a 58 and I ordered a 58 ..... perfect

I may go put it on right now :)

Richard, Bob, Moon, thanks guys. So, when ordering a Fed, I order a size larger? In Moon's case, it seems his fit true to size. Which felt quality did you get, Moon?

You've all seen the Fed IV a million times.... but on on me!

Here's my contribution to the national archive of Akubra Fed IV (Imperial) photographs...

Did you trim the brim down a bit?

I'm thinking about getting a Fed IV. Do they seem to fit true to size?
Do they seem to fit more snug than a Campdraft?
It's funny--everyone here seems to have had the opposite experience from mine with regards to comparing the fit of their Fed IVs and Campdrafts. I currently have two Fed IVs and three Campdrafts (all Imperial Quality felt, all size 60), and the Campdrafts were all about 1/2 size smaller than the Fed IVs (after all five hats had gone through the expected "shrink to fit" period, that is). My head measures almost exactly 60 cm, so that's the size I've ordered every time and I haven't been disappointed yet, even though two of my Campdrafts required a minor amount of stretching to be a bit more comfortable. I should also mention that my head is only slightly wider than a regular oval, so I don't have the "long oval, wide oval" problem to deal with.

And yes, I've also been told by Hats Direct that the Fed IV tends to run about 1/2 size small, but that hasn't been my experience. Either that, or I've just been incredibly lucky. ;)

No. That's it's original dimensions. I find the brim is slightly small compared to the size of the crown, but that's just me.
How wide is the brim on the Fed?
The Fed IV has a dimensional brim, so it's 63mm/2-1/2" on the sides and 70mm/2-3/4" front and back. The thing is, the proportions will look slightly different on a size 60 Fed IV from the way they look on a size 55 Fed IV simply because of the difference in the diameters of the crowns.

Very true. Mine is a 60cm, and from straight on, the brim looks small for size of the crown.
Being the imbecile that I am, it took me a while to figure that out. I'd see a photo of a member wearing his Fed IV and think, "Why does the brim on his hat look wider than the brim on mine?" Then I'd find out his hat was three sizes smaller than mine, and the penny finally dropped. lol

For me, I think the Fed IV would be perfect if they added 1/4" to the brim, or made the brim 2-3/4" all the way around, but that might be too wide for people who wear smaller sizes.

Possibly because when you look at the hat straight on you see more of the 2 1/2 profile of the brim, add to the fact that the brim on yours seems to have more of an upward curl on the sides, making it look smaller. Plus the tall crown as well. I may get one.
