The Cap Faction

Thanks Chepstow and RJR. I'm more of an occasional wannabe cap maker than a cap maker. It's been awhile since I've tried my hand at one now. But I do sort of feel the urge coming on again. Also as it happens I ran onto a couple of new to me caps today. One is a Malrov flat cap in a nice houndstooth plaid and the other is an Albert Kempf military beret.

Hi, Michael, and welcome. Jeez, in that last picture I thought I was looking at the Irish-American writer J.P. Donleavy. I think you'll find that you came to the right place: good people and plenty of hat info.

It's been a good cap finding couple of days for me. Besides the Malrov Houndstooth I posted I found another Malrov summer weight grey on grey herringbone

And a completely unlabeled Donegal tweed

And this Albert Kempf felt beret

Plus a beaver fur cap that I forgot to get a picture of and has seen better days, as well as an Irish Country Hat.

And I have a question for any cap makers that might care to answer, what do you use to stiffen the bills? I've tried a variety of materials that I like to varying degrees and on the last couple went to leather. I think I like that quite a lot.

Hi gang - long time no check-in! Lots of good stuff posted recently! Special props to Michael A for some wonderful creations! Go for it, buddy, it's an addictive activity, to be sure!

To address your question, you can find some stiff card stock which is what was used in many old caps for the visor, but like you, I prefer leather (though I reinforce with a water-resistant card stock to give it stability). Hope that helps!

Thanks Mr. Stuffsmith, for the props and the answer to my question. I looked at your caps on the artisan page and mine are kindergarten drawings with a #2 pencil on old cardboard compared to your "old masters". Those are some real eye openers.

jhoops01 - That's a nice sampling of caps you've got going there. I particularly like that first one.

A new show-and-tell. This knockout tweed was a fabric swap with Cordova, and was exactly enough for a single cap. I’ve held onto it for two years in hopes I could do it some justice someday. I took a deep breath, cut it up and made this Five Points cap from it.

It was hard to decide which side of the tweed pattern I liked more... You can see the other side of the pattern under the visor. Gorgeous stuff.

I also used the natural edge of the kid leather skin to sew the overlap on the sweatband, which I’m fond of and will do again.
