I recall the day he was assassinated, televised funeral coverage,
the shock registered on adults. A day of tragedy.:(

I remember JFK's assination well. I was a sophmore in high school...and happened to stay home from school that day. On the couch in front of the TV sick with a cold...I watched the first news flashes. Shock and deep sadness completely overwhelmed everyone. That heavy atmosphere of sorrow was everywhere for a long time. Then more astonishment, later,as Ruby killed Oswald...live..on TV.
We went from a storybook moviestarlike illusion of Camelot to a swearin ruff and gruff good ole boy from Texas. Whatta change...never been near the same since....

It was a day of infamy for my generation.

I was in 9th grade in a Montgomery Co. MD public jr high.
It happened during 4th period, but the students didn't know until after lunch, at the start of the 5th period. Our very punctual science teacher who threatened to mark us tardy when we were not in our seats and quiet when she walked into the classroom as the bell rang, was late that day. 5 minutes passed, no sign of her...10 minutes....the teacher who taught in the next classroom came, told us to remain seated and stay quiet and be patient...close to 20 minutes passed before our teacher came in, red-eyed, and broke the news.
I was glued to the TV the next few days.
We went downtown to watch the funeral cortage, and I saw a blur of light blue against the blacked out window of the limousine the former First Family rode. To this day, I believe that the blur was JFK Jr.

My friends here in Japan heard/saw the news as the very first live satellite broadcast. NHK was experimenting live broadcasts with US broadcast companies for the Tokyo Olympic Games to be held the next year. The date and time for the very first experiment coincided with the assasination, so instead of the planned program, Japanese viewers got live coverage of the news.

I still have the Life and Time magazines and the Washington Post covering the assassination.

The once and future Camelot.
