Awesome refurbishment by Tom Gomez, let's begin with the ebay auction where I gambled on this 'loser' of a hat. Auction # 272339040115 won 8/17/16 for $57 (incl s&h). Here are some of the seller's pics - showing the sweatband completely loose and falling away in spots, and a hole through the straw at the brim break in one spot.
The hat was originally sold by Southcomb in Baltimore, closer look at the veultas and the hole (lower right of the pic) near front of hat.
The hat arrived August 26th, I took it out of the box, looked it over, put it back in the box, relabeled it to Tom Gomez and took it to the post office that day. Next post - results

I advised Tom to not hurry but take time to deal with this hat's issues. It arrived today, here are some pics. Tom re-blocked the hole to the rear of the hat and repaired it nicely, and did some nice ribbon work.

Here are some clearer pics, you can count the weave (on the brim) yourself, about 600 WPSI. I count over 700 on the side of the crown; this was once a VERY nice Panama, very much worth the rescue effort. I suspect that a comparable hat today would cost $1,000.

'nuther look at that nice ribbon work. Tom advised me the ribbon was vintage and shows some fading, inconsistent color saturation and I decided to stick with it, glad I did, looks great with this 'experienced' hat.
