Military 'woolly pully' sweaters

Where did you find your recent Pick & sons purchase? As mentioned a few posts above, I do have one of their Sub mariner Off White Roll Necks which is brilliant. I think they too were based in the Leicester area. I Remember the Bridgedale company's sweaters you mention too.

Has anybody tried the Original Montgomery RAF Sweater? It's made in UK by the oldest surviving British duffle coat maker. It's pricey, but it has the right pedigree and looks very nice.

You can also get the SubMariner / Raf White Roll Neck Sweaters from Outdoor Knitwear, ACE Cafe and sometimes Grand Prix Legends websites in the UK, I think another firm that sells them is called North Sea Clothing. There is a thread on this topic forum in the WW2 section.

Outdoor Knitwear make terrific jumpers. Keep an eye on their terms and conditions though, if you're ordering in the UK. I bought one of their Russian style nautical sweaters last winter and, sadly, it was too big. On reading their returns instructions it said they would deduct the cost of the original postage. I found that a bit odd as not only was it sent postage free, but in the UK online retailers have to refund your postage under a certain time limit. I queried this on my returns note, however, and did receive a full refund. I think, had I not made a point of asking, I may have had that amount deducted.

Does anyone know where I can obtain a RN Jersey Seaman's size 4 made by Turner and Jarvis Ltd NATO Stock No 8405-99-571-2811. Size 4. A good price paid for one in good condition.

Have you a photo of the Jersey? I don't think you mean the kind of Woolly Pully we're discussing on this thread. However I'm not completely clear whether you mean the wool roll neck or whether it is a thinner wool crew neck RN sweater: I had one of those many years ago as a teenager.

I'm afraid i haven't got a photo. But it is the WW2 style with crew neck and not the modern style.

Yes, I think that's like the one I had many years ago. I shall have a look for one - I wouldn't mind one myself as I am such an aficionado of military sweaters.

Bridgedale I remember as a manufacturer of Woolly Pullies back in the 70s, a bit like Outdoor Knitwear today. They also made wool hiking socks.

I think I know they style the gentleman here is referring to. (There is a thread on the first page at the moment of the WW11 section on this site which mentions this type of Jersey I think). If I am correct it is Navy Blue, has a sort of round neck, quite a long body, plan stitch all the way through. I think it's worn almost as an undergarment with other layers over it, so would keep the wearer very warm. If it is that style, I bought mine a few years ago at a Surplus store in Southampton just off the main shopping street, so maybe a trawl around surplus shops would be the first way to try to purchase one of those jerseys.

Thanks. There was one on ebay recently but I saw it after it had been sold. So another size 4 might be available somewhere. Jerseys made by Turner & Jarvis are the best shape for someone tall and quite thin. I will look at the WW2 section.

Good morning, I have just looked at the Jersey I mentioned above that I think you are referring to. Infact the label does say " T & J Ltd, Mens size 4", then "VOCAB 21234." I have no idea how old it may be, it must be at least 5-8 years since I bought it from the Southampton Surplus shop. I too am tall and thin and I would agree with you that it is a good fit/shape. I hope you find one soon.

By the way, I mentioned that you may like to look at the WW2 section. There are two threads there which may be of interest to you. At the moment they are both on the first page. One is about half way down, titled, "WWII British Uniforms Guide Royal Navy" The other is towards the bottom titled "White RAF Roll Neck Sweaters" although in fact there are probably more postings there about the White Sub-Mariners Roll Neck Sweaters (Which infact you may want to consider, I have some and they are a good fit for a build like mine, you can get them from ACE Cafe, Grand Prix Legends, Silvermans, Outdoor Knitwear, they come in Off White or Navy Blue.)
