One You May Not Have Considered

This film is reserved for the end of the holiday season - around the New Year. Often we view it on New Year's Eve, if no party is in the offing.

John Huston's last film, The Dead. (1987) (aka The Dubliners)

Set in Dublin at a New Year party at the turn of the 20th century, The Dead offers a raft of beautifully crafted characters. The story is based on a collection of short stories by James Joyce published as Dubliners. The backstory is the political side-taking of the Irish at the time. But the story unfolds in the glorious Victorian Dublin row house of two spinster sisters, Aunt Kate and Aunt Julia (Helena Carroll and Cathleen Delaney). The film features one of Angelica Huston's best, most subtle performances, as well as a not-to-be-missed turn by the magnificent Irish tenor Frank Patterson.
It is a beautiful film for costumes, for sets, for lighting, for extraordinary performances. I cannot recommend this film highly enough. Though a warning - it is not an upper. As a career cap for director John Huston, it is, though lightened by plenty of small comedic moments, a somber film with a solemn message spoken by one of the characters:
"One by one we are all becoming shades..."

Note that outside the USA, this film is known by the title of the Joyce story, The Dubliners.

Ladies, I'm with you on this one--Love actually is a splendid movie (Don't get me wrong, so are all the other choices here).

It's got love in all it's forms, with some classicly witty writing, superb acting, and a happy ending. It's a film everyone can enjoy, and that to me makes a heck of a good holiday movie.

Not to mention it's stars the gorgeous Kiera Knightly ;)

Cheers
Craig

Craig - you are the first man I have heard say something positive about that film...well some of my gay male friends like it to but that's to be expected.

And yes, I agree with everything you say...except the bit about Keira - not my type! Although very sweet in that film. :D

GOK,

I go to movies for good, believable characters, a good, engaging story, and a happy ending. If I wanted anything else, I'd just stick to real life :p Based on that criteria, there's no genre of films that I don't like.

Cheers

I tend to bumble around with the "If you can dazzle them with Diamonds, baffle them with Bull(I have a dirty mouth)" :D

In all seriousness, thank you very much for the compliment :) Made my day!

Cheers

In a town that is full of commercialism and has comparably little left for any real Christmas spirit, I'm looking forward to going to the movies to see a new film being released today called "The Nativity Story." It looks historically accurate and stars Keisha Castle-Hughes (from "Whale Rider") as Mary.

I miss all those animated features they used to show every year when I was a kid. They don't show them here anymore. :( Kids miss out on so much Christmas magic these days.

Love Actually was great!

Of course The Nightmare Before Christmas.

A Charlie Brown Christmas. (I watched it the other night, the song makes me cry, I think it's so beautiful.)

Elf (which is actually VERY funny)

The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus - 1985 (year after year my cousin and I get a big laugh out of The Great Ak, wish I had a screen shot of him)

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Frosty the Snowman (Happy Birthday!)

OATMEAL?! lol

That Santa Claus special is one of my favorites. Did you know that it's based on a story by L. Frank Baum? :)

Remember the Night is one of my all time favorite films, Wolf. Early Preston Sturges, isn't it? That scene with the mother gets me no matter how many times I watch it. The duet at the piano? Sigh. Barbara Stanwyck is so wonderful. And would you ever see that ending today?

Chiming in on the Bill Nighy love too. Despite of (or perhaps because of?) the sappiness I loved him in The Girl in the Cafe. Kelly MacDonald is always someone I'll stop to see too.

Ah yes! No one else I know, with the exception of my cousin/best friend knows about this show. For whatever reason, we always laugh at The Great Ak, he's just funny to us. You know the part when all of the immortals hold that meeting about baby Claus, he says something about a world full of evil and we cry laughing. Then repeat the line until like June of every year. Maybe we're just weirdos. :p

Along with Die Hard one of my other favorite Christmas time movies is Lethal Weapon and my latest favorite is Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Scrooged is down right great. The perennial Rankin & Bass animated stuff is a must. A Christmas Story is practically required.
