Question about what is a Newsboy cap

First, thank-you for all the knowledge I've gleaned from everyone here. :eusa_clap

I've aquired a cap that reminds me of the one my grandfather wore all the time. HE called it his 'train cap'. I grew up(54 years now) thinking that was what they were called. He called it that, because he wore it to work all the time (worked for CN trains in Canada).

Now that I've been frequenting the boards and reading about all of your wonderful hats, I'm not sure what to call this. It has a flat top, snap brim, texon non-breakable visor, leather forehead band.

They have various names. In the U.S.A., back in the 1920s, the most typical model was called an "eight-point" cap, due to it having eight pie slice shaped panels. It was also called a golf cap. (Caps with one big panel, instead of eight, were usually called driving caps.)


Today, anything goes. Call it a newsboy, a Kangol, a driving cap, or whatever.

The cap is one large peice of material, that is pleat/darted around the edges(8 of 'em) So, driving cap would be the first thing to call it.

In chicago at least we would refer to a driving cap more in terms of an Ivy League. The newsboy cap has so many different variations to them that it is hard for me to keep up with it sometimes. The most common ones I hear are newsboy, apple cap, little apple, big apple, 8 piece, 8/4, melton, and "the one with the button in the middle".

The best is when people come in to the store or call me and say to me, "ummmm yeah you guys got that cap." "What cap are you talking about sir." "Yeah that cap you know the black one." "Sir, I carry about 150 differet black caps." "Man you know the one I am talking about man the one with the button and the bill."
