Akubra Overload

Hello,

This is my first post - although I have been a long time reader - on this forum and I do hope I'm not violating any forum rule or recommendation by posting here. I also hope this is the appropriate thread for my question. I did a search on the forum and could not find a definitive answer.

Owning mostly vintage hats I inherited from my ancestors, I purchased my first "modern hat" about a year ago ; the hat in question being a Moonstone Federation IV. I recently removed the lining to clean it and while it came off really easy, all the glue used by Akubra remained on the felt.

I tried to email Akubra to know what kind of glue they use and how to remove it but did not hear back. Has any of you found a safe way to remove this glue without damaging the felt?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Best regards from France.

Welcome, G. You've come to the right place and you've posted your question in the right thread.

From my experience, most glues can be softened and carefully removed by warming the glue remnants with a hair dryer. You'll probably have to fashion some sort of tool, or maybe use a dull knife (such as a butter knife) to scrape away the remnants. After that, if you wish to reattach the lining, use a double-sided fabric tape.

Hope this advice pays off. Looking forward to more of your posts and, of course, photos of your hats!

Hi,

Thank you very much for this response and piece of advice. And I'm glad it comes from someone who appreciates Frank Zappa.

I'll definitely try the hair dryer method. I do not know what is the consensus over here, but I just tuck the linings of my hats under the sweatband. I never seemed to have them falling off, and I can take them out when they need cleaning.

Anyway thanks again, and I hope this first post was the start of a more active participation on this forum for me.

A Moonstone Camp Draft would be nice.

I really don't like how so many Akubra hats have that line at the break what I assume is from the tolliker ?

I rarely see one without that irritating line and no one ever talks about it

I thinks it's from the cardboard ring in the hat box for shipping. It goes away very quickly.

we must be talking about two different things ... these are permanent markings in the hat

I've owned probably 15 or so Akubra hats and all but maybe 2 have had this and no sponge or brushing does anything to it ... it is actual worn into the felt and clearly from the hat making process most likely the tolliker

the holders in my boxes come nowhere near the break and also the mark goes under the ribbon strands so that would make no sense
