Ha, good picture and certainly a very well stocked bar. Interesting how berets and alcohol seem to connect in many, and various, ways.
There is of course the archetypical image of the winemaker, or vigneron, tending his grapes or sampling the wines in progress with a beret on his head:

But not just wine, of course. The difference between beer and beret is, after all, only one single letter:
Whisky and other substances of Anglo Saxon origin may be less common among boineros, there are still a few good samples to be found. Jack Kerouac, for example, pictured here while reading poetry with a whisky induced mind at the 7 Arts Cafe in NYC (1959):
During the prohibition in the United States, the Canadians of Basque origin on the
Newfoundland coast and the Isles of Saint Pierre and Miquelon did a good trade in spirits of questionable origins:

Personally, I love the story of the recently deceased 107 year old Antonio Docampo García who attributed his long-life to drinking four bottles of wine each day and never drinking water.
Antonio Docampo García, who died in January 2016 in Vigo, northwestern Spain, said he only imbibed his own homemade, chemical-free organic red wine.

Yesterday in my mailbox, a completely unexpected but much appreciated gift by a fellow boinero: a book with historic postcards of Chasseurs Alpins. No dates or specific information provided, my guess is all were taken early 20th century, prior to WWI.
Above some scanned photographs; great material with many good sized tartes.

A tale of two tarte alpins.
In September I spotted a tarte alpin on Ebay.
It was a size 59, my size.
I bought it for $29 plus $19 shipping.
Sounds like a good deal? Maybe.
The label read BEATEX OLORON 59.
But it had shrunk. The diameter was closer to 30 cm.
It fit like a size 54 and the head band was cut to enlarge the opening.
And it was pretty dirty based on the wash and rinse water.
But it came with a Chasseurs Alpin hunting horn badge. So, that's something.
After washing and stretching on a Hat Jack it now fits and looks pretty good.
The notch is shown below.
A few days later Daan sent his newsletter with news of the new winter weight Laulhere tarte alpins.
I bought a blue Laulhere.
The two berets are a similar weight and feel.
But the Laulhere looks and fits great.
I have outfitted it with an insignia of the 23 Bataillon de Chasseurs Aplins.
The 23 Bataillon was disbanded in 1940.
Their motto is Lou Souleou Mi Fa Canta, (the Sounds of Provence), the cicada.
All in all, the Laulhere beret is a great value compared to what is available elsewhere.

Nico, Daan, I'm with you. I keep a beret in the car as well. You never know. I rarely leave home without a head covering, but sometimes it happens and a beret is perfect for any occasion.

Bérets Foulard Cote – Nouveau available for interested aficionados!
The Bérets Foulard Cote – Nouveau are the result of a meeting with Monsieur Guédon, the man behind Boneteria Auloronesa, and South Pacific Berets; the aim to produce a unique, limited edition beret in a very small number, which is completely different from any beret known and that shows perfect craftsmanship and offers the best possible comfort.
After an initial batch of 20 bérets cote with ribs running outwards from the centre of the beret, late 2015, a new model has been made with ribs placed on the outer circumference of the beret. It is a complete novelty and the result of endless (and very time consuming) experimentation during the felting process.
Although the differences may seem insignificant to the untrained eye, the process of making these berets is not simple at all. The "cotes" are made without any additional thread and are absolutely permanent. The manual manufacturing process is long and intense (only some 50% come out meeting the manufacturer’s stringent criteria) and the final shaving takes at least 30 minutes per beret.
The Berets Cote are fitted with a black satin lining, with the "Manufacture de bérets - Boneteria Auloronesa" label, picturing the red cows of Béarn. This is one beautiful beret!
These berets are produced in a small batch and sell at US$135.00. These models won't be reproduced and form unique pieces of artisan French beret manufacturing.

South Pacific Berets sells two sizes of txapelduns, the 15" and the very-very large diameter in 16" (which is respectively 13.7" and 14.6" in US sizes and 34.9cm and 37.2cm in the metric system), available in Black, Bordeaux (Granate), Navy and a very small number of custom made 37.2cm models in cobalt (UN) blue.
It takes a bit of courage to wear a txapeldun, but once you do - you won't want anything smaller. Most customers buying our txapelduns find it an excellent hat for hiking and tramping, offering the best possible protection from any weather and still easy to roll up and fit in a daypack or pocket.
