Highwayman Try-on Jacket.

Can anyone get their hand far enough into the small external zip pocket to reach the bottom .
Is an internal pocket a necessity , and which type of fastening ( if any ) is recommended ?

My preference is a vertical pocket without closure in the leather facing inside the jacket, my Teamster in this instance but works equally as well on a HWM.

Trevor, If you haven't ordered this yet I would have the inside pocket as Fanch suggests, I have them on mine and not use the outside top, a great feature, better than deleting it but can be awkward to get small things out from.
As for fastening, the standard Talon zips I like rather than the fancy types.

As mine was bought completely stock (as pervmy previous post), it lacks an inside pocket. The breast pocket on the HWM is a much larger one than you'll find on the likes of a 30s Halbelt, very useable. I don't really miss an interior pocket, but if I was to be buying one that I could custom order, it's probably handy just to have one in the inside breat. I specify mineon the inside *right* breast so as not to add too much bulk to the one side as I use the breast pocket; also more convenient for me being a southpaw.

I find the exterior zip breast pocket on my HWM to be all but useless due to its extreme depth and narrowness. I also think it looks cluttered and stupid - when I finally order a fully custom Aero, I will definitely go for a no-fastener internal pocket and delete the exterior zip breast pocket. However, it seems the HWM's pocket *is* one of the more generously sized ones in Aero's lineup...my Teamster's breast pocket is even narrower and more useless.

Personally I find the zip breast pocket breaks up the monotony of the plain front of the Highwayman jacket, compare it with the body of Aero's Happy Days jacket. I don't use mine and keep it in the closed position.
As for the Teamster. The stock jacket does not come with a breast zip pocket.

I do like the look of the single breast pocket on my Aeros. I find the HWM one actually very useful for my small wallet and large phone. The breast pocket on my Dustbowl is on the small size - I could maybe slide an ipod in there, but that would be it. I like it for the look, but I'm certainly glad I added the inside pocket for utility. The best breast pocket on any of my Aeros is the deep, angled one on my Bootlegger. I'd opt for one like that on a future hb project.

I completely agree with this. I once eliminated the breast pocket from a jacket that was custom made for me because I never use these pockets and I thought I would prefer the simpler look. After wearing the jacket for awhile I realized that the front pocket added a balance to the jacket and I should have left it alone. I also find that an inside breast pocket, either vertical or horizontal, is the most useful to me on all of my jackets.

First post here - I am often over at Styleforum posting about suits and tailoring, but my rekindled love for leather jackets has led me here. The quality of discussion and info is fantastic, so thanks to all for your input and great photos.

Love the look of the jacket you have here! I have a question - you mention this is a "try on jacket"? I'm considering ordering a B6 from Aero and wasn't aware that they directly offered this service to customers - it's not mentioned anywhere on their website (which seems to be omitting a lot of key information regarding the ordering process IMO).

This would be very useful to me as I'm not quite sure which size I should go for when ordering - how did you go about arranging this? Many thanks!

Thurston Bros in Seattle offers this service (not sure if you're in the US). I'm going that route. Not sure what the Aero factory offers.

Thanks - I've seen the Thurston Bros service before and thought it was a great idea. I'm in the UK (as I think the OP is too) so I'm intrigued as to how he got the try-on service.

Yes, the try-on service is something arranged by THurston as a stockist, not Aero itself. It's a popular option given the expense of shipping a jascket back and forth across the Atlantic if anything needs altered! In the UK, I believe we're on our own, so to speak. If you have any doubts, the best course of action is to call Aero directly - full of really helpful advice, and they know their own product catalogue and what sizes will fit how, given your measurements. The best option, of course, is to pay them a visit - well worth the investment of a little time and cost in order to be certain of fit the first time out, especially if you prefer one of the slimmer styles.

Originally ,I went to the Grand Theft Aero Open Day Sale hoping to get a bargain ,and at the same time take the opportunity to try on jackets to find the perfect fit , since Aero sizing seems to be problematic for a lot of people. I didn't get a jacket , so I took the plunge and ordered a size 38 ,as the shoulder fit looked good . I already have an Aero motorcycle jacket
( bought off eBay ) which is a size 40 . This jacket is a good fit , but the shoulder seams overhang , and I think the shoulders look too big - otherwise I would be very happy with it. I regret not asking them to measure me for the fit while I was there , but I thought the 38's were the best fit at the shoulders.
About two weeks later I emailed my measurements to Christine , and followed this up with a phone call , and ended up speaking to Murray , the pattern cutter . I explained that I normally take a size 40 , but I wanted to size down for the closer fit ( as per sizing info on Aero site ) and would the 38 be ok for me. Murray said my measurements would be compatible with the 38 pattern block ,but would I like him to send me a 38 try-on jacket . So I said "yes please "
The photos show the fit , but it is close , and feels tight with a sweater . Movement feels a bit restricted , even with just a shirt on. I don't know how much looser it will feel when worn in.
I'm still wondering whether to go for a 40 ,and a looser fit.
I will get an internal pocket , though I'm not decided about a fastening on this.

these on each side for me, left pocket for wallet and right pocket for mobile phone.

Yes go with vertical close, 1 or 2, no fastening, just 'slip in' though most jackets generally have 1. And don't overstuff them or it will look like you have tits. Or moobs as we are supposed to say these days

If you are in the UK and want a Highwayman fit jacket, couldn't you just order a stock jacket from Aero, make note of the modifications needed, return it and order one made-to-measure?
