More good info. I had read on here somewhere that the fraying was not a "fault", but was not aware it also suggested a date.

Phillip Neubauer Berlin - Charlottenburg, no paper label, 132 grams, probably 1930s. Similar sweatband to a J. Heinr. JTA Wien (date stamped 1939) made for Phillip Neubauer Berlin but that could be store specific.

It doesn't really suggest a date, more like a style that spanned a certain amount of years. People still Fray ribbons today. I usually fray ribbons when I make a hat, but if you are looking at vintage hats, the frayed edge usually mean the hat is pre-mid 30's. But like I said, there's always exceptions.

Gents,

Just got this Cavanagh? Bowler in the mail. It is a really cool bowler. The size is WRITTEN OUT (so I think it is a 1929/30 hat according to our own "Hatted Professor"). The color of the liner is very cool. BUT THEN, I looked at the production tag. It's a DOBBS production tag. Anyone know what gives? Just curious.

Looks like a very early production Derby, as you said. I can't read the address, but should read 247 Park Avenue. Early Cavanaghs sometimes sport Dobbs or C&K labels, and my guess is that they had not yet finalized the Cavanagh label. Cavanagh (reportedly) had a completely separate manufacturing wing or floor, but early appears to have come out of the main factory floor.

That seems strange. You wouldn't think that Dobbs would be jobbing for Cavanagh during this early period. Following intently...
