God's Pocket starring Philip Seymour Hoffman is a real powerhouse in my opinion. Hoffman was such a fantastic actor and incredible presence on the screen - I can't think of anything he's done that wasn't compelling. The characters in this film are such seedy, hardcore city types that its difficult to like or feel sympathy with any of them - that's what made this film memorable for me - a trip to the dark side of human nature and the struggle to survive in a hard world. Nope, no special effects, hooks or one-liners - just great acting and story telling with a bit of dark humor thrown in.

An okay little indie flick, directed by Mad Men's John Slattery, that ably captures some desperate inner city lives. Besides Hoffman, it has a great performance by (the also always great) Richard Jenkins. It's set in South Philadelphia, but was filmed in rundown neighborhoods in my old hometown, Yonkers NY.

Huh, I have not heard of this one but will definitely check it out. The wife and I always enjoyed Hoffman's work. Oh and I have to second Doc Strange's mention of Richard Jenkins. The guy never disappoints whether it be a dramatic or comedic role.
