I made a goof. I was trying to peek underneath the sweatband on my new Caxton western. I heard something that sounded like threads ripping and saw that the sweatband was starting to tear at the rear stitches. It does not appear to have ripped all the way through. Is there a glue maybe that can fix this or do I leave it as is? I'm going to leather conditions. The rest of the sweatband but only from the outside. I'm afraid of ripping it some more if I pull it out again.

I made a goof. I was trying to peek underneath the sweatband on my new Caxton western. I heard something that sounded like threads ripping and saw that the sweatband was starting to tear at the rear stitches. It does not appear to have ripped all the way through. Is there a glue maybe that can fix this or do I leave it as is? I'm going to leather conditions. The rest of the sweatband but only from the outside. I'm afraid of ripping it some more if I pull it out again.

I'd leave it be and treat it gently. Conditioner will help preserve it. How pliable is the rest of it?

Back in the day hat makers would put a strong tape for reinforcement behind the seam of the sweat before stitching. I do that with mine and it works great. I prefer transpore tape. It's flexible and sticky. Hard to peel off once it's on there.

Sounds like a good thing! Hat to take off my hat and have some tape, migrated from between the sweat and the felt, stuff to the back of my head. I'm enough of a fashion faux pas as it is.

I'd leave it be... if you can gently get behind it with a strong narrow piece of tape that would be good.
Otherwise just leave it alone... I fear messing with it will damage it further .
Doesn't look too bad... at least not bad enough to affect the fit
About a third of the stitches look to be in tact .
I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Believe me I know it is painful when it happens .... I have an early 40s vita Felt Strat that is unreeded... while snooping behind the sweat for some info I popped a few stitches ... I wanted to cry

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I may try a piece of tape back there and leave it as is. I dont know of any hatters in my area anyway.

I have hat a similar issue. It is like a rock chip on your car, that is all you see when you look at it. Resist the urge to mess with it, just like a scab. That is why I have a couple of hats in for restoration at NW Hats.

I have a Stetson Saxon in Caribou Gray. Currently I have a dark brown ribbon on it, which I like, but I'm wondering if this is somehow a faux pas combination, given that I have seen essentially no examples of a gray fedora with brown ribbon. What do you guys think?
Also, the current brown ribbon is 2 inches tall, as opposed to the standard 1 5/8". Is this too wide for a ribbon?
I will soon be sending the hat in to have it re-blocked, so now would be a good time to change the ribbon.
I realize there are no hard and fast rules on this, but I'm interested in getting a general consensus of opinions from experienced hat-wearers.

I just sent my Cariboo Stetsonian to Mike at NW Hats to change out the black ribbon. To my eye the caribou colour is a gray (with perhaps some brown tones in it but I consider it a gray hat). I am having Mike replace the black with a grey ribbon a touch lighter in tone than the caribou felt. I am sticking with the 1 5/8" ribbon as I like the proportions.
If you like the looks, then that's fine to my way of thinking.
I've seen grey hats with black, reddish brown, navy blue and burgundy ribbons... probably a few other colors, too. My taupe Royal Stetson has a reddish brown ribbon and bow for the hat band, and yellow/gold colored ribbon for the brim. I do believe it came that way from the factory.
The width is up to you as well. You can go skinny, medium, wide and ultra-wide; it's up to you and how you want your hat(s) to look.

I know I have messed with little issues before and just made the problem worse. "A man's got to know his limitations," and I'm not fit to do any kind of alterations or repairs that require even a modicum of skill, art or sound reasoning.
