agreed ... I wouldn't wear that thing if you slipped a stack of Benjamins in the cloth sweatband to persuade meStrikes me as "on another guy" headware.

Hey ive weared a Trilby like that.Not anymore, no because is another guy headwear, but because was a terrible quality. the Stitch began to tear apart, begun to discoloured. Strange because i bought from the same vendor a Funyi wool felt hat, which about i have no complaint.
Now I'm happy to with my last order a Fedora from maidana, one´s of the oldest Hatters in my country, the other one is lagomarsino but i don't like the catalogue.
For those wondering about a funyi is. Is a hat related to tango, with a narrow brim, mostly used for " los campadritos" of Buenos Aires. I don't like tango my musical preferences goes from classic to rock/pop, but i bought because the ties with my city.

I would agree with my esteemed co-troublemakers that it's definitely a "casual" hat and not a "dress" hat. Wear it with whatever you want, and don't be overly concerned with color matching and such.

You gentleman are tough to please. Would anyone care to point me in the direction of what you consider to be a "great" Fedora? Name brands are also welcome. I'm not looking for a "ten gallon hat" but something classy and perhaps, classic.

look at the "what hat are you wearing today" thread
look at hat store sites
look on eBay
you will see something you like ... and all that matters is if you like it
thin ribbons
wide ribbons
mid ribbons
welted edges
bound edges
custom edges (a la Cavanagh & Mode etc.)
travel weight
dress weight
tall crown
low crown
wide brim
narrow brim
etc etc on and on all day
and any combination of these that you please
if I may be frank ... I would maybe steer you away from those cloth hats ... unless that is something you really dig ... then by all means ...
but look into a proper fur felt hat
doesn't matter what brand ... or even how old it is ... just that you dig it and feel comfortable in it
best possible thing to do is if there is a hat shop near you get there ... try on hats ...
if that is not possible many of us hear can lead you in one direction or another

If you are looking for a great fedora at a reasonable price as an entry point into this addiction then check out the Akubra offerings. They offer great value, especially if you order from Australia and not from David Morgan (the US distributor). Akubra has a wide range of styles(brim widths and crown heights). Other than a few vintage Borsalinos I stay away from vintage as I don't know enough and my eye is not discerning enough....(too many mistakes made on the purchases). Other than Akubra I am not a fan of the modern Stetsons (other than a few models bought on sale) and other production house offerings. I say this as I think for about the same money (or a bit more) you can buy a custom hat from one of the many great custom hatters here on the Lounge. Buy a custom then you have a hat for the ages, personalized for you.

While we certainly have our preferences, I personally don't want to talk you out of liking what you like. For most of us, tapered, low crown, small brim fedoras aren't desirable. Many come here pursuing a vintage look, and gravitate toward the styles from the 1930s-50s. That normally means high, straight crowns and wider (2 1/4"+) brims. Most of us seem to evolve into that style naturally. I would suggest that if you think you look good, and you feel good, go with it.
Spend some time looking through some of the hat threads and posts. You'll get exposed to many styles and types. We have a plethora of folks who go for the older style fedoras (commonly seen in older movies), quite a few who like the European styles, and quite a few who like Westerns. If you become a "hat enthusiast," as some of us have, your tastes and style will settle into a certain area.

I came across a navy pork pie hat the other day that caught my fancy and now I just cannot leave it alone. But I don't know for sure what I'd wear it with. Here are a couple ideas, and I'd like your opinion:
How close am I? Also, could I wear it with a charcoal grey suit?
- A navy/tan tweed sport coat with tan/taupe/khaki or olive wool pants
- A grey herringbone tweed sport coat with medium or dark grey wool pants
- A medium grey suit
- Cotton khaki pants and a blue check collared shirt, perhaps with a coordinating sweater
How close am I? Also, could I wear it with a charcoal grey suit?
