I'm sorry; I don't mean to be hard-headed or rude, but I don't understand what this means. I keep seeing it all over the web ("Gotta wear the hat, or it will wear you"), but what does it mean? Taken literally, I suppose it means I shouldn't borrow someone else's hat and then just carry it in my hands. But that's a ridiculous reading. Does it mean I should wear it with the utter confidence that it is the best looking thing I could ever wear? I already do that; I don't buy clothing I don't want to wear, and if my taste changes after I've bought it I get rid of it.

What am I missing here?

Then do it again and often. I don't think your missing anything here. As I said, try it with all your outfits and come to a decision and conclusion as to what ensemble (s) you most enjoy wearing it with.

I think it means you're supposed to wear it with an attitude. You know, tough guys wear pork-pies, so you're supposed to walk around snarling like Popeye Doyle. Walk around with a copy of the N.Y. Post under your arm. Ho hum: maybe it's me, but I can't imagine what attitude I'd wear with a pork-pie and tweed - Existentialist? Norman Mailer?

Wearing the hat and not letting it wear you just means being comfortable in wearing it. Not being self-conscious. "Owning" your look, so to speak.
Bingo. It's all about confidence. If you act self-conscious because you're wearing a hat, the hat is wearing you. But if you put it on your head and forget about it as if you'd been doing it your entire life and it was just as much a part of you as your arms and legs, you're doing it right. It's not about an attitude as much as it is about a lack of attitude--I'm wearing a hat; so what?

Many of us have been there. Just wear the hat, and before you know it people will get so used to seeing you in hats that they'll comment when you're not wearing one.

Where's the OP...?
If you're referring to me, I've been busy since the day before yesterday. If you're referring to T Rick, I have no idea.

Thank you everyone who answered my question about the navy hat and my confusion over the confident wearing of it. I'm going to get it, because I think it looks good and will go with a lot of things in my closet. Plus, I'm already known as the oddball in my small town, so a pork pie hat will go right along with that, I think.

Thanks again.

That's the spirit. Now get to posting some pics of this hat.

There's the perfect answer... You "think it looks good..."
Congrats...

I have a few outdoor cold (for California -- I'm cold adverse) events I need to attend where I need to be dressed-up (suit/tie and overcoat) so I figured I would get a hat to go with what I'm going to be wearing: navy blue or grey suit, white shirt, black brogues and a navy blue overcoat.

I'm 6'2", #224, with a fairly large head. I have hats to wear in this sort of situation for hot weather/sun protection, but not for cold, hence this posting.

I don't care for either fedoras or trilbys -- it's just a personal thing. Homburgs interest me, but they can look affected and they're now associated to some degree with negative elements. I don't think I could pull off a bowler and a cossack/diplomats hat don't offer any sun protection but they sure would be wonderfully warm.

That leaves something like a western hat and what else exactly? I thought about just packing a navy watch cap or my Campdraft but both seem too casual. Thanks for help.

@Abraham , a wider Brim Homberg is nice , an OR , the Campdraft will dress up , but you could rock a Western with the Brim width you feel comfortable with . You can't go wrong really , except unless its bitter cold , I wouldn't wear a Watch Cap . If I could find the Right Homberg with the dimensions I liked , that would give me a reason to get a Nice Hommie .

Choices, choices and choices. I say wear the hat, do not let it wear you. I wear my fedoras/homburgs/caps with lots of country/city attire. In my mind I see it works. Lots of "don't be stupid rules" that do not need recounting as they are obvious decorum, social mores.

Here's what I'm talking about ...

I wear a cousin of Michaels casually.

Check the thread - http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/what-hat-are-you-wearing-today.19520/page-6238#post-2205072 and see what is showcased daily. No pretense or posers as the posts are done daily by "regulars."

Early in this thread (several threads combined) I posted " Granted I am a an older guy and feel freedom from peer pressure and social pressure to choose my costume as I wish." This freedom has allowed to really enjoy wearing my hats.

Wear them in pride, Eric -
