Panama Hat Thread

Fed, any other photos of that hat your wife is wearing? I've been through this page a couple of times, but (WADR) I missed the hat because I was bedazzled by the lady's beauty. Any idea where a hat like that might be obtained?

I bought that hat from a little shop in Cuenca, Ecuador. It's actually got real dark burgundy, black, and brown dyed straw in the weave. I saw it, liked it and bought it on a whim... (for me, originally). I think I paid $20 or $22 for it back in 2012.

My daughter has that hat now. Actually, Mike Miller has it (NW Hats) to put in a leather sweat (mostly getting rid of the nylon thread that was used to put in the cloth sweat... makes you itch like crazy!), size it more to her head shape/size, and put a burgundy pug on it.

I can check around Cuenca in July when we both go down together. MrsFed is in Ecuador now, visiting her family in Guayaquil for the holidays.

Any other pictures I have won't be showing much more of the hat.... I'll leave the pic to myself of the one where MrsFed is also enjoying her ice cream!

Hey! This is a family station! ;) I'll check and see at home if there are other pics. I know I have 2 pics on my phone of my daughter wearing that hat.

Oh, hey, you can check with Mike Miller at NW Hats. I know he got in a bunch of hat bodies along with some finished orange hats (OSU Beavers), green hats (U of O Ducks) and some one-off hats last time I was at his shop. One in particular was done in this same style but with really dark navy and dark red/burgundy. You should be able to find his shop on Pearl Street in Eugene, Oregon and his Facebook page. If not, send me a message on this board and I can get it to you later.

Another pic from the same time:

This doesn't show much detail at all, just an old cell phone pic from August 2013. Fed'sDaughter wore this once and it became hers, ha!

How many times do you have to prove she's too cute for you? You two are like those sitcoms, e.g. King of Queens, with the schmucko guy and gorgeous wife!

Thanks very much. I spoke to Mike some time ago, but he couldn't do a 7 7/8 because, as I remember, he didn't have the block for it. He's come quite a ways since then, so maybe he does now. I'll be calling him, as I'm now determined to seek out one of those hats. Sweet family you've got.

I picked up this Monticristi at an antique show last year. Never got around to posting a few pics. It was all rumpled up and someone had a wire sewn under an edge binding around the edge of the brim. It is actually a fairly fine weave. I took off all the edge binding and took it to Northwest Hats and am waiting for Mike to reblock it and put in a new sweatband.

Putting in a wire is a real waste if the hat has a nice back weave like mine has. Doing the back weave is an art unto itself and and takes a lot of skill to do. Why someone would want to hide it is beyond me. I just hope that when Mike reblocks it the stitch holes will close up some. However I got the hat really cheap so even if they show it won't be big loss.

Mike, I intend on being there. Hopefully Mike will have it done by then. But he is pretty busy doing some remodeling in his shop so I'm not really counting on it. He's making room for more equipment.
