Freddies of Pinewood 1950's jeans opinion.

What's your opinion guys? I'm looking for a decent pair of quality jeans and I was thinking about this company. I have a pair of Heavy Americans on order with Gustin which seem to be taking forever as deliver was originally supposed to be mid December but has been put back to mid Jan at best.

I like the look of the Freddies but I wonder what they look like on. I'm not a vintage dresser but I do like a bit of vintage flavour in my day to day outfit. Are the Freddies 1950's very high waisted in comparison to contemporary mens jeans and how about the fit in the leg? I'm 6'3, 36" waist and fairly athletic legs so I assume the looser fit of the 50's would be fine.

Regards

Garry

Maybe Sloan will see this as I think he owns Freddie. Maybe contact the company and ask them. When you ordered your Gustins, did you go with straight or slim. I found the Gustin slim low rise tends to bite into my crotch :eeek: and the straight seems to work best for me (I am 6'2").

Not especially high waisted or wide, but higher than the awful, hipster norm these days, and a comfortable leg width. The fit is similar to Prison Blues, in my experience. I have a couple of pairs of their 40s cut, and the quality is excellent.

I have the Freddie's 50s and liked the relatively high rise and wide cut, but when I got my Heavy Americans I never wore the Freddie's again. The HAs are much more substantial and need to be worn a lot to break them in, but if you like the different style of the Freddie's then they're a solid VFM buy.

Eric, I have never seen Freddies but the high rise of the 1940's and 1950's is appealing to me. Any preference between the two?

I've got a pair of Freddie's 50s. They're a really nice jean at the price, though it's a less 'refined' denim than you'll get from Gustin: quite slubby, lot of visible weft and quite a bright shade of blue. The rise is much higher than Gustin's slim, so I tend to use my Freddies with my shorter jackets, such as a B-15 or A-2. They also have a markedly wider leg, which makes it good for wearing over off boots.
They're very much a different proposition from Gustin, but good value for money. If you're looking for something similar fit but with more of a Japanese-level build quality, I would give SimonC, a member of this parish, a bell: hehttp://www.simonjamescathcart.com/

Fanch, I haven't looked at my Freddie's for over a year since I started getting my Gustins. I remember thinking that the 40s were maybe a bit too obvious, hence choosing the 50s. There's nothing wrong with them, but I just prefer the fabrics and colours of the Gustins.

As Sloan says, simonc is worth a look if you want a wider leg and maybe higher rise, as his stuff seems higher quality, albeit dearer.

Why is it that I tend to overvalue goods overseas and undervalue those at home? [huh] It's a mystery. :D

Freddie's had a bit of a buzz because they were cheap compared to others, but then Gustin came along and changed the game. Their star is waning a bit now so the buzz has shifted to Lawless, but there's still so little of their stuff out there that the jury is still out.

So, Fanch, the US still has some big guns in denim and leather. And San Francisco and Phoenix are surely just around the corner from Dallas :).

Man, I need some of the Jeans you guys have got, Im totally Jean Ignorant. I have Combat Pants mostly, and it is a bit too military for a small town to SLip through without drawing more attention.

Would Love some REALLY Vintage Style Jeans.

Gustin seem good, though they're a bit modern/ low waisted for my taste. Lawless similarly look good, but all their stuff is too narrow in the leg for me. Depends what you're after, really. I think the general assessment of Freddies - ie that they're great for the money, but there are better out there if you want to spend a lot more - is fair enough.

I'm hopinv Prison Blues expand their range and get into selvedge. I has a couple of pairs of those and was well impressed with them as tough, basic denim wear in a fifties cut. I couldn't bring myself to buy into the £200 plus denim bracket, but if that works for you the range of options really opens up. Looking forward to receiving my SJCs. Simon's initial range looks really promising.

Edward, if you ever make it this side of the Great Pond, you might look at Bill's Khakis 5 Pocket Jeans. The overall construction is outstanding, and the side pockets are lined with the same heavy cotton that Bill uses for his 8.5 oz Original Twill Khakis. Bulletproof. Like you, I don't care for low rise anything!

Thanks for the tip, Fanch. Hoping to make it to NYC again by 2016, I'll put them on my list to look at. Been planning to look at the khakis, but I didn't know they did denim too.

Edward, my two favorite items made by Bill's are his regular 5 pocket jeans and his 10.2 oz Bullard twill khakis. Most of his pants come in relaxed fit (M1), standard fit (M2), and trim fit (M1). Also pleated or plain front. Lots of variations; lots of styles. His best seller is, I think, his 8.5 oz Original twill khakis, although I prefer the Bullard as I think the heavier Bullard drapes and holds its shape better.

Next year I hope to spend a few days in London and see some things for which you Brits are famous.

What actually is 'low rise'? Does it mean hipster type jeans or those saggy arsed ones that so called 'Gangsta's' wear?

After you have perused our second hand clothing markets for overpriced old jackets, we have a fantastic section known as History! We do it by the bucket load. All the way back to the Saxons, Vikings and Romans as well as the more well known Royals. And of course Shakespear :p

That's my plan. Lots of history there to see that happened before my forefathers fled various W European countries 1-2 steps ahead of the law. :D

Regarding high rise vs. low rise, to me anything under a ~12" rise leaves me with the feeling my crotch is kissing my tonsils. :eeek:

Thanks for the responses guys.

Fanch, I've gone with the straight cut Gustin Heavy Americans and am hoping they get here soon as I have high expectations of them.

Edward, I'm not a fan of the low rise hipster jeans either and at 44 am well past them anyway. I'm happy with a bit of extra rise but don't want belly warmers.!

I'm pretty new to upper range denim so I'm not too sure what slub and weft are? I assume it's a texture thing? I suppose will never know without trying so I might give it a punt.

Garry

Ps Fanch, you'll need to visit a lot more than London to see what the Brits are famous for!

Sorry for the grave digging, but I take it the rise advised on Freddies of Pinewood is the FRONT rise? I'm pretty tempted by the 1940's pre-shrunked. It seems it's pretty hard to find nice denims with a high rise under 150EUR.
