I live in the southeastern US. How far up and down can I dress my Panama? If I were in white or black tie, I would likely go with a top hat or Homburg, respectively. But I can wear a Panama with a business suit in most situations, right? What about with a suit for an outdoor wedding in the evening, assuming neither white nor black tie is specified? How about wearing it with jeans and a short sleeved, collared, full button shirt?

I have other "beater" hats that I wear to the lake, when working in the yard, etc. But when I go to town I'd rather wear my nicer hat.

I would think it would go way up on the style and formality list , and can dress down easily . But if you want to check there are websites like realmenrealstyle.com that cover about everything (I don't know if that site has anything on that question). Montecristi Panamas are there top of the line . There are guys here that would know .

Even a sub-fino, coarsely woven panama looks fantastic with a full suit, regardless of time of day. I just wore mine to a wedding a few weeks ago, and I frequently wear my panama with my business suits and everything looks totally appropriate. The same hat dresses down to jeans just fine, in my opinion. I've even seen in the forums that some have worn panama homburgs with their black tie ensembles (I would love to try except I don't own a panama homburg).

My opinion may or may not match the popular consensus expressed by the so-called "experts", but I think a Panama hat can be worn with anything from jeans-and-tee-shirts to a nice suit. I wouldn't wear one with anything more formal than a suit, but otherwise I think Panamas are quite versatile. That being said, if the Panama in question is showing signs of age it should probably be relegated to casual wear.

Even if the "experts" say otherwise, my thoughts align with yours.

I've been watching Poirot on Netflix for a few days and I love how he pulls off his suits and Homburg hats; always a Homburg! The guy is pure class. He even wears a silk scarf/ascot with his pajamas! It wasn't until about Season 10 when another character came onto the scene and was wearing a Homburg. Before that, everyone else was in some sort of fedora. Poirot has nothing on Justin, Moe, Steve and Matt! (a million pardons for missing any other Homburg wearing gents)

BTW, I love the straw "Panama" Homburg!

Poirot is the greatest! Suchet's portrayal for BBC is iconic -- not sure Kenneth Branagh can match his class.

thanks... thats great to know

funny thing is I have a source ... but they just won't reply to emails for some reason

they are on the last page of this catalog

http://www.capasheadwear.com/?page_id=204

no idea why they will not respond to someone trying to give them money
Moon, I did this a while back & can't remember who I got a batch of them from.
I got about 50 or so. Great minds think alike...be afraid, be very afraid...

Just joined - long time follower, this place is great, lots of very knowledgeable people here and the best part is the politeness and decorum! Rare in this age of the internet.

Just won this hat on the bay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/142336014563?rmvSB=true&autorefresh=true

Hope this link works as I can't post pictures yet. I would guess this hat is from the 1960's or late 1950's from what I have learned from this forum. You can see from the photos if the link works and you click on " see original listing" The original price tag under the sweat reads $10.95 and there is a stamp of an "S" inside of a triangle there as well. No other markings are to be found. What I find interesting is the hat does have a onionskin liner under the sweat. Anyone care to venture a guess as to who the original manufacturer was? Oh, and the seam for the liner is on the side as opposed to the rear. It's a very nice semi soft felt and I love the color. It's what drew me to the hat! Beaver Brand?

Thanks All...

ok gentlemen ... (I use that term loosely) ... thanks to some detective work by my main man Bob I have 300 dust covers being delivered to my door tomorrow

I only need probably 30 or so for now ... even though there are only probably 5 of my hats currently without them I like to have a little stock

so ... hit me up via PM if you want some and I will gladly ship them off to you

I'm doing 40 dust covers for $20 or 20 for $10 ... that includes shipping

there are only 300 for now so first come first serve

Thanks for the reply Bob and it's great to be here! "Beaver Brand hats - since 1860" is why I guessed that too. Still puzzled by the onionskin liner, I haven't seen any Beaver Brand with one but that don't mean much since I'm no hat expert not by a long shot. Wish full thinking on my part to guess it might be a Stetson by the "S" inside of the triangle inside the sweat? Did Stetson ever make any private label hats? Whatever it is I like it and will reshape it to my liking and make a hatband for it when I get to it. I haven't seen a bash with a "mule kick" in the front for a long time and did find an ad from 1955 with that kind of a bash available. I'm a serious long oval and it fits me pretty good but it's not marked LO. The felt feels as good as any of my 3x, 4x beaver hats but not as good as my 3x clear beaver. I'm wondering if it has any beaver in it but I'm guessing it does.

Thanks again, anyone else have any clues?
