Who is your favorite "forgotten singer"?

When grooving to those good old tunes , you occasionally stumble upon remarkable singer you *never* have heard of before. You either itch to find out more about them or recomend them to others.

I would like to dedicate this thread to those wonderfull canaries and meowing cats.

Pauline Byrne

Alreet! I have a craze for a female singer called "Pauline Byrne", her voice are so... and reminds a bit of Anitha O'day. I heard her on Artie Shaws "Gloomy Sunday", but cannot seem to find her on the web or anything...

I would be very thankfull if anyone knows more about this wonderfull lady!

Tony Sacco, a nice-sounding tenor-baritone and guitar player who made a fair number of band records - mostly with Enric Madriguera's ork in 1933-'35 - and was privileged to sing with Benny Goodman on a few occasions (back when BG's name didn't mean much).

Marjory Logan, a velvet-voiced dark-toned singer who helped make the mid '30s Johnny Green band what it was – just perfect.

I'm a big fan of Helen Ward, Benny Goodman's first gal vocalist -- she had a much more mature voice than her successors. Also like Kay Weber, who sang with the Dorsey Brothers in the mid-thirties -- and was, in fact, the last survivor of that band!

I've got what I think is the first record Helen ever made, with the Freddy Martin band early in 1934. She did Boulevard of Broken Dreams and a mid tempo thing with steel slide guitar bits called Let's Put Two and Two Together. She sounded very grownup indeed if she was (supposedly) only a teenager.

I guess I never thought of Helen as "forgotten" – but I suppose, for the most part, she is...

although from a slightly later part of big band period I would nominate Dorsey's singer stuart foster- Tamer aswad? I think his real name-
Dorsey quoted saying was the best after sinatra.
seems to be very little written about him. He may be in Fabulous Dorseys movie + others

weber and Ward great singers but I think well known to record collectors.

Don't know if you have the song or not but you can go to Wal Mart.com and download the song for .88 cents.

I picked up the 78 of Artie Shaw's Gloomy Sunday back in the late 1970s and I was gobsmacked from the first few notes. Probably the best version of one of the most powerful songs ever. And yes, I too fell instantly in love with the seriously seductive voice of Pauline Byrne.

The other side (Don't Fall Asleep) is pretty good too, in fact it's an erotic experience ("don't fall asleep and dream of Hedy, awake or asleep you're still my steady...") Woof! Growl!

But Gloomy Sunday is in another league. The whole record is outstanding......one of those near perfect performances where everything just gels. It was actually banned by the BBC because they thought it would encourage suicides (well, it was 1943 and there were a lot of bereaved and lovelorn people about....)

But sorry, I've never been able to find out anything at all about her other than that she briefly sang with Shaw.

Ginny Simms. She was a singer with Kay Kaiser's band and then was on radio and made a few movies in the early 50's. "Hit the Ice" with Abbott and Costello was the most successful. There are several really great musical scenes in the movie in which she shows off her voice.

Helen Forrest, Al Bowely as HadleyH mentioned (who BTW was killed in an air raid during WII - his "The Very Thought of You" is great), Russ Columbo, Charlie (?) of Charlie And His Orchestra, June Christe are just a few of my favorites.
