What is your opinion of the 'Sherlock' coat the Belstaff Milford?

Having just watched a repeat of the new Sherlock episode current season I noticed he was wearing what at first I thought was a vintage trench coat but which a bit of research shows is a very expensive Belstaff. What do you think of it and would you pay the price or buy a cheaper replica?

You could get a Crombie of a similar stripe, equally well-made, if not better, for half the price. It's astounding the prices Belstaff charge for what they're selling, but that's what happens when you open a big old flagship store oLondon's pricey Bond Street and pay Ewan McGregor to appear in your adverts.

If I had the money I would buy one. Something at the back of my mind says that the Milford was waterproof as well as incredibly warm. and judging by the screen time delightfully prone to snapping in the wind in a just so manner. But it's a moot point since they are now rarer than diamond hens teeth.

It does look nice, but it is stupid expensive!
Also it is discontinued and since the whole Sherlock thing i doubt you will find one for a decent price...

Like the previous guys i would recommend Crombie, i bought a black Greatcoat last year and it is an amazing coat.
Really well made and very warm.

It is on sale for the moment:

I am sure i paid less then that last year, looks like prices have gone up...

I'm still looking for one good overcoat, something similar to the Belstaff Milford (Sherlock) coat. It's no longer available, but there are reproductions available. Some are rather inexpensive of unknown quality, but it seems like there's a version available that's identical to what's being used in the BBC show as they now make the coat that actually worn in season three.

There are certainly similar coats. Trench/Great Coats/Officer Coats etc all have some similar looks and features. I'm not sure about the pleated back on the Sherlock coat, as it almost seems too dress like. Trench coats usually have a split back that can be unbuttoned if needed.

And if anyone has any other suggestions for something similar I would be interested. The biggest problem is that I wear a 48 long (very long.) I recently purchased a bespoke trench coat that was 56" long. I'd like a wool coat of similar length, and so far I've found nothing that long that would fit me.

I got the same one, great coat!

Often tempted to get an old one second hand, if peacoats are anything to go by an old one should be even better!

They're a solid piece of kit. I was wearing mine while covering part of the Clutha bar disaster in November. The damn place is right next to the Clyde and damn cold (not Chicago/NYC though), and my coat was the envy of the press pack. Unfortunately, my footwear wasn't of the same order so I was numb from the ankles down after three hours of standing around. :eusa_doh:

I really hate being taken for a fanboy...

And we've had enough of those around here of late :D

Nice coat Pip. Be interested in seeing pics of someone wearing one though as you have no idea of cut with those sorts of product shots. Fair price too if it's a goodie.

The Sherlock coat is really nice - I'm a fan of the design. I especially like the red thread used on the button holes, as a detail (fwiw, I'm sure I read somewhere that this was something the Beeb's wardrobe department added to the original coat used in the pilot, not stock). I've not handled an original. Likely to be a decent enough coat, though nowhere near the quality you'd expect from any of the House Favourites in these parts for that price. A friend does have a very nice copy purchased from a Chinese maker, via eBay, for Wested-Indy type money. It's impressive andfits her well. I'd be careful gonig down that road, though, and rely on word of mouth. There are many places selling these at present, mostly catering to the "cosplay" crowd, so I'd be wary that a lot of the options are designed to be worn in aconvention centre for a few hours half a dozen times a year, rather than actually function as a serviceable Winter coat.

I know what you mean. I can't wear my Indy jacket for the same reason - mostly spends it's life on a shelf.

Interestingly, I've never had a single Indy comment while wearing my Wested Raiders, but then I never pair it with a fedora (which seems to be the real source of Indy comments.... not that these bother me anyhow, but ymmv).

Not long ago, I discovered BBC’s show, Sherlock. And like many others, after watching several episodes of the series, I grew curious of what coat Sherlock branded. And like many others I discovered after some light research that he wore a near two thousand dollar Belstaff coat. I then started searching for alternatives, which I found very little of. That was, until I found this coat on a site called ‘fjackets.com’. Initially, I was uncomfortable with the idea of buying a coat online, especially considering that all the pictures were directly from the show. But, I decided to purchase it for about $160.

Now, for the details. Benedict’s coat in the show appears to have a black and grey basket weave, but this coat has a black and grey wool blend, which still looks good in my opinion. The buttons have a different look to them, but it seems to fit the coat fine, and they are securely attached. Quite strangely, there are two buttons on either side of the collar, coming with a small strap attached to it. I am uncertain of the function of these buttons, but I intend to remove them. A highlight of the coat is, of course, the red button holes which have vibrant color, and fit the buttons nicely. I found the coat thin enough to reasonably wear in weather around 60 degrees (f), but warm enough to wear in weather 30 degrees, which could depend on who you ask. The wool is rather thin, mostly ranging around one quarter inch. The coat sports six pockets. Two inside, two pockets for your hands, and two cargo pockets. I should also mention that none of them button up, nor did I find a need to, as they are big enough that items falling out are of little concern. The wool is flexible, and the collar does not substantially retain its shape. Keep in mind that I bought this coat to be big on me, so that I might grow into the coat. The arm holes are not particularly big. On their website, it says that the shipping time is about 7-9 business days, but it came a day early, much to my delight. I am extremely pleased with this coat. The quality, durability, and the look is fantastic! I believe this to be the best alternative for the Belstaff Milford. Five stars.

The Strap and buttons under the collar are designed to make most use of the collar. It can be buttoned across between the lower ones to hold the collar closed, or, judging from the look of around the back across the top ones to hold it in place when flipped up (similar to the elastic strap on the back of an Irvin collar) - at least that seems the most likely purpose for the higher buttons, though if it fits across the front on the higher buttons it could be used that way too.
