If you can find a vintage Royal Stetson like that one in a few days, your hat-fu is unsurpassed.

You won't find anything quite like it in the modern Stetson catalog. Maybe a Stetsonian, but those are discontinued.

Of course, one of our custom hatters could scratch your itch.

I just check out some of my sources for rare and to most, unwanted "stuff" from the backs of old warehouses in the garment district, or my family's old stowed up wardrobes in my garage, or thrifting......Hahahaa! I have a weird knack for finding what I'm looking for.....Unless that happens to be a DB Navy suit in 6x2 in a 38 Short. But that's Suit-Fu, not Hat-Fu, alas. Though it does seem to be OK with any other suit or Vintage Western Wear I set my eye to. Can't find good fedoras at thrift shops anymore....Too bad. I'll have to keep on searching! Hahahaaa! Seriously; you Slay me with that; Hat-Fu! Yes! Any custom hatters on here that are located in or around L.A.? Aside from that price-meister over at Baron's?

Hi there.

I have some hats which have been sitting in an attic for a while and I have decided to finally let them go. A couple of Stetson Royals, another Stetson which looks like a Country hat and a couple of Stevens. Apart from the Cowboy hat they are all fedoras and one Homburg.

I'm no hat specialist so I have no idea of value. I went to ebay and prices for Royal Stetson is all over the place for example. From a few tens of Dollars to several hundred.

I then thought about looking for a forum to try asking advice and if you google fedora hat forum this forum comes up.

So I would like to ask how do I go about valuing and identifying what I have?

Thanks in advance.

I didn't find a vintage one, but I did find a very good quality modern one, profile is quite solid, and more or less meets the same parameters (obviously a vintage model would be preferable, but the one that I found is quite decent) I'll be getting it and playing with the pinch and the crown, and hopefully posting up a pick in a week or three once I've finished fiddling with it....

Well, with those resources, you're in better shape than most of us!

Condition, size, style and age are all crucial variables here. The "value" of the hat(s) is, like any other item, the value it has to you and that of the buyer.

We can help you with the variables if you post some pics, but it will likely still take some research on your part to determine how you want to proceed.

Looking forward to seeing what you have. We'll help where we can.

Well, with those resources, you're in better shape than most of us! - Most of my Father's Mother's side were in the schmatta (clothing business). Aunt Caroline bought for Bullock's or May Co. or maybe both at different times, I'll have to verify that with my other Aunt, There was an Uncle Rosenberg who made jackets for Bullock's, and also an Uncle Wolf who did the same, Great Great-Grandfather made clothes for the Czar. To sum it up; I have clothes coming out of my ears.....Mixed bag, but still. Piles of weird stuff. Some good, some not so good. Like an over-stocked thrift shop. I have some socks from the 40s. Lol!

Cool. Can't wait to see it. How modern? - Like made within the past 15 years, I'd figure, but not bad at that. I have to see it in person first, still, it does look like it has a good hand to it, and the color and finish seem nice too.

I also spend excessive amounts of my excessive amounts of free time on Ebay, and at various hot spot thrift shops that I know. I work 7ish to 4, but usually done by 10...so yeah. Love investigations and research! And Ebay. And Thrift Shops.

If it's within the last 10-15 yrs, the quality can be hit or miss. Also, it will most certainly be precreased and that's hard to change.

Most of the rest of us are trolling similar waters for hats, as well. Don't forget estate sales.

agreed

and to help we need photos of a few things

the outside obviously

the interior of the hat

any markings on the sweatband and any labels under the sweatband

that will be a good start to narrowing down some of the particulars that you are interested in

Hi All, as by subject, how packable is the Akubra Traveller? can it be rolled and stowed away for some time? or is just the crown that is squishable?

Also I'd like to ask, is the felt 100% rabbit? how good is it?

Finally, I understand there is some form of wire in the bound edge. If I were to trim the edge and thus lose the wire, would that improve rollability? what about shape retention?
Cheers

Just bumping my question up a bit -- does any owner of a Traveller want to chip in?

I don't own one and have zero interest to ... but something jumped out about your post

first of all I would never roll any hat ... even if it is considered "rollable" ... not recommended in my mind

but if a hat has a wire in the edge of the brim it was clearly never intended to be rolled

rolling hats to me is nothing more than a novelty and I do not recommend doing it to any hat on a regular basis
