Stefan, Great find. It's definitely from the original factory. Seems 1980 would be about right. Also market specific. Does it have "Export Qualität"?
Steve, thanks. Yes, it is an Export Qualität. I forgot to post that shot of the sweatband.

Tonio, Super find! Would it possible to take a close up of the writing in the lower left corner in the last photo? Also what are the ~ dimensions? Thanks!

6-3/4" length, and 4-3/4" width.

Closeup of the text in the last image:

You may also find it interesting that this came from the last the hat shop in Béziers, France - "Malart" (Henry Malart). At this link there's a small image of the old storefront and some beautiful hats on display http://portiragnespassion.over-blog.com/article-a-decoiffe-au-musee-du-biterrois-116755401.html

last one for today and certainly not the least one. Borsalino Morello, size 57 in dark brown (close to black actually). Bound brim at 5cm and crown 10cm high at the pinch. This one came as part of the Holland-Italy hat exchange program and i'm glad it did. Strangest thing however is that the hat was unfinished: the sweatband was only partly sown and the ribbon and bow are not the usual grosgrain. Daniele forwarded the theory that this hat was a sample to show the quality of the felt and general idea of the hat, so orders could be taken. The felt is nothing short of incredible. Longhair finish and takes on every shape you throw at it. Now if only they would punt in the xtra unny for the extra 1cm brim i wanted...Still a fantastic hat. No clue as to what Ta-Damami might mean (Daniele couldn't figure it out either.

Interesting bit of extra information there, Carouselvic. Thanks. But still yet another one of those Borsalino riddles to solve. I see now that I shouldn't have been typing in a hurry yesterday, because several letters seem to have gone missing or run amok in the posting. At least the pictures are there.

Here's one that popped up on Etsy Sunday afternoon. The deep rich brown caught my eye, then the price. So low it was impossible to pass up. So cheap I don't want to say for fear of being called a thief. *cough* thirtyeightbuckswithfreeshipping *cough*
That free sbipping was seriously fast, too. Mailed on the 11th, in my hands today.
This thing is nearly pristine inside and out, with just a little misshaping to the brim that was easily fixed. Felt is really nice, what one would expect from Borsalino. Crown is a tad over 5", the dimensional brim is 2 3/8" X 2 1/4". 113g. Unreeded sweat, stitched in liner. Brim edge is either felted or a super finely stitched overwelt.

By the number on the tag, looks to be made in 1978.

Here's with a quick crease.
