it was pretty much always on the black keyhole tags like that but seemed to disappear on some in the early 50s for a period of time ... I believe sometime during or around the OPS era ?

that looks to be maybe a 50s tag? ... what hat is it attached to ?

maybe this thread will help

http://www.thefedoralounge.com/threads/dating-vintage-stetsons-by-size-tag.46483/
Thanks Anthony, that was the thread I was remembering. Don't know why it didn't come up in my search. None of my OR, which I'm taking to be early to mid 50s have the Stetson on them. This is on a Royal Deluxe fedora.

I just worked up the nerve to turn out the sweat and see what tag is under there and I think it's a fairly modern one. I don't have the photos on the computer yet, but I'll put them up when I do.

And while I'm asking questions, is this Stetson's mode edge?

that's a 50s hat ... and that looks to be a Mode Edge ... I'd need more pictures though

I would have said 100% that it is until I saw the underwelt on one of my Flagships that has a hidden stitch.... or "ghost stitch" as I've hear it called

I think my brain had the Stetson on the tag thing turned around so that it was the early 50s when it was there and not before or after. Anyway, I was working on the assumption it was 50s and trying to figure out if early or late. The size tag is something that looks more modern than my OR's and I can't seem to find my Royal fedora at the moment.

Here is another shot of the edge. There is now stitching on the bottom side that I can see, even under light magnification.

that reorder tag is mid to late 50s most likely ... they started showing up around '52 I believe and stayed into the early 60s ....

and that looks to be a mode edge

nice hat ... I believe it is mid to late 50s

Thanks Anthony. I didn't realize that those reorder tags went that far back. So I'll feel safe in telling other people it's a 50s hat and I'll feel comfortable telling myself that it is a '52 hat since that would make it the same year model as yours truly. Ha ha.

Thanks,
Michael

they say those tags started showing up around 1952 .... they still used the orange and red tags for many years at the same time ... while transitioning I guess

I feel strongly that your hat is a mid to late 50s offering ... gorgeous piece indeed

Thanks Anthony. I appreciate your help and your appreciation of the hat. I agree with you on the dating completely. So to recap, to me it will be a 1952 hat because I'm easy with lying to myself if it's supported by the least possibility, to the hoi polloi it will be a '50s hat, and to hat people it will be a mid to late '50s hat. Ha ha. And in for a penny, in for a pound, I'll put my last photos here too.

Thought I had a number for a hat liner supplier (Sheldon at NAS) Looks like I may have that number incorrect as it appeared to ring to a private residence. Anyone out there have a number for this vendor, or ... maybe another vendor for liners? Thanks gang!

Hello. I have a question for you panama aficionados. I was just gifted a David Morgan panama fedora woven from toquilla fiber. Its an inexpensive had with a very low weave count. How shapable is this hat? Im used to working with fur felt so this is new to me. Is this fiber safe to steam, wet and shape or should I just enjoy it as is? I don't want to wreck it. Thank you for any info you can provide. Willybob.

I had a decent panama with a telescope bash I really grew to dislike. Sent it to Mike at NW Hats and he totally reworked it to a really nice teardrop so I know it can be done. Can't offer any insight on the HOW!
