Thanks! I got this one at a saddle shop in Fort Worth. I've had it a little over a year. Holds up great.

I think Resistol started making 5" brim "straw" hats recently (like 2-3 years).
Felt hats they have the Hi-7 and the Chute 5.

There's an auction house here in SoCal that sells high-priced western memorabilia, some of it historical. I asked them what they used on the older stuff, and they recommended Blackrock Leather n Rich. I've used it on old, stiff, ready to crack leather, and it works. Pretty easy to find online. I restored a saddle that had been sitting in a barn in Texas, untouched for at least 40 years, and it brought the leather back from the dead. Frank

Ok, Here's a photo of a hat worn by Tom Berenger in Last of the Dogmen. I find the crease kind of different and I like it.........What say you?......

BTW HJ, you also might try Rawhide Cream if you come across it, it's for softening and conditioning rawhide. I use it to soften rawhide Bosals it makes it a lot more gentle on the horse and less scratchy. I've heard good things about Blackrock too, but have never tried it.

Latino, I like the crease and the fender roll but I can't abide a shovel front. Just not for me. Good flick, BTW.

I can't say I like a shovel front much either, but I sure understand them it's a function over form thing. It functions quite well to give you unobstructed field of view and provides more shade. After all, hats are equipment and do have a actual function the fact that they can express style is only in passing.......

Another thought is Saddle Butter. I used it on a badly checked 20+ year old Fallis saddle I got. It worked wonders with softening and conditioning!

Thanks guys for the tips on the Rawhide Cream & the Saddle Butter. I have located the Blackrock Leather n Rich locally & plan to pick up some soon. I'll source some new lacing when I see how the color ends up being. These bags were bought for me by my grandpa when I was a kid & I want to pass them on to a grandson.

I have a Tula palm straw they call the "Lattice Gardener". I guess "gardener" because it has a wide 4" brim and "lattice", of course, because it has a vented crown.
It came with a nylon stampede string with a plastic lock. It looked cheap so I pulled it out and put in a leather stampede string with a wooden bead lock that I had from another hat which has since "returned to his fathers" as they say. The leather stampede kept sliding off the crown and generally just gave me hell. The sweat is snug enough that I don't really think I need a stampede string anyway. So I pulled it and replaced it with this leather band that I found on eBay. I think the band looks decent. The stars are golden; I was expecting silver.
So, does this look legit?
Or am I just trying to put lipstick on a pig?

I think it looks good. The only thing to point is that the buckle goes on the right side of the hat, not on the back.

Looks good to me too but the buckle should be on the left, your left when wearing the hat. you just have to give it a quarter turn, clockwise.

Thanks. I didn't realize that the buckles are treated like ribbon bows.
So, to clarify, the buckle should be over my left ear (not my right)?

Yes.
Hatbands with a buckle are "treated" like ribbon bows.
