True, but just because something doesn't look bad doesn't necessarily mean I want to resemble it.
I had a beard from 1976 to 2015. I did not grow it from a sense of fashion but from laziness. I just got tired of shaving. Of course, the 70's and 80"s were (at least in New England) the era of the beard. Which mattered not one iota to me. Then one day (circa 2015) I went temporarily brain dead and using an electric trimmer all but shaved off my beard. I wondered what it (meaning me) would look like if I really did shave it off. So I did. I liked it. My wife did not, but now she is used to it. Besides there is something so manly about feeling that alcohol sting from the after shave hitting your now naked face. It makes you think: "take that you bearded sissies". Besides now days there is less gray.

I used to always grow a beard in the winter and shave during warm weather. Started doing that right after high school. My gf liked the beard so no problems there. But when I started dating my wife about a decade later, she didn't like the beard so I rarely grew one. As grey crept in at an increasing rate her dislike rose proportionately. But I started sneaking a beard in during winters about ten years ago, despite her thumbs down response.
Then, about a year or two ago she suddenly declared she missed my beard when I shaved it off. Now she prefers it so I have been keeping it year- round.
My only guess for her change of heart is the face under the beard has aged sufficiently so as to compare unfavorably with the grey! Actually I think she likes the more uniform grey vs. the patches of grey mixed with brown in the past decade or two.
Personally I just think the beard balances out my rather weak chin and being I keep my balding hair cut super short, a nice beard (a la Monty Woolley) is much less boring to see in the mirror.
Also, while I love my Gillette super speeds and badger brushes, I hate bleeding. And ingrown hairs. And being 10-15 minutes later than usual...

Probably about the same time that I was hirsute. Beards are great for covering moles and scars, the only problem that I have is I'm too vain to look like Santa. Why do we have to adopt our winter camouflage as we get older?
I get called something similar when I'm out polishing the old MG. The missus calls me a chromosexual.
