Not photos but this video from Christy's shows a mix of modern-ish equipment used. Probably the biggest difference is the electric brim cutter which I have also seen in France. The experts here will no doubt spot other things. It seems like quite a small workshop for production hats, but presumably they have people at each station normally.

Picked up my first vintage hat block. Should it be treated with something and sealed before I drag a hat all over it?

hi @BobHufford I've got a few vintage blocks and have not really put any treatment on them as of yet as it isn't needed. what I do, do is place a layer of cling film over the block before I block a hat. this stops the moisture getting into the block and destroying it over time.

Thanks Terry! I won this yesterday for $20 (no idea on how bad the shipping is going to be) and need to find a flange in my size. The only one I have is the one that came with the block above, but it's a size 7 (IIRC).

I never get that lucky. Another nice find there, Bob. Looks like it's good shape too. I've been looking for one of those myself. I'm trying to come across a 2 5/8 brim flange, among a bunch other things.

Here's something cool. It's a fez-shaping tool (you know I like my fezzes). Originates from Egypt (Cairo) this one and almost certainly made before WWII. The fez was forbidden in Egypt in the fifties. The mould is made of brass and consists of an inner and an outer form.

And a fez-maker using one:

By the looks of it the inner mould was heated over a flame after which the felt was pulled over it and pressed with the outer mould.

Wish i could help you there. This one was actually on auction last week, but someone outbid me for it at the last moment. I read that the last guy in Egypt making these things died forty years ago, which makes sense because there's really no market for traditional fezzes anymore for a long time. The auction notes stated that the whole contraption weighed 15 kilos. The seller bought this one in an antique store in Cairo in the seventies.

It's probably just as well steur. Not like there would be much of a market for them here in Tennessee. I'd probably make a few just to say I have and them have a 50 pound conversation piece sitting around the hat shop. Still, a very cool piece of hat making history.
