Fair Warning about Aero Alpaca Lining ... and any suggestions, please!

As I get older I am more sensitive to itchy materials hence I believe the tartan lining offered on Aero coats is wonderful. Just take a loss and sell the jacket.

Eastman and Aero use different sourced Alpaca wools as far as I know. Aero's is quite soft and less itchy compared to Eastman's.

Yeah, it is the Vicenza. Some of the water did reach the inner side of the leather, but it seems to have dried out. I wouldn't recommend the hair conditioner treatment tho, because it didn't make it any less itchy. Again, this jacket should be able to withstand being soaked. I know it's not great for a leather jacket, but like I said, I wear my clothes hard and beat them up.

I have a Buzz Rickson’s B-10 ( not the Eastman one...a BR B-10 hand-picked in Japan).
Its Alpaga lined and its as cozy as can be...same quality with my original WW2 B-11 parka.
The EU Alpaga I have seen so far...hmmm...not the same, would never have bought it.

Thanks for sharing this... I will definitely avoid ordering Alpaca.
I am not sensitive to wool, but I am not impervious to the really itchy materials which seems to be your case as well. And having it shed like crazy is definitely a deal-breaker.
I hope you can get it relined without paying crazy fees one way or another.

Also wanted to add that the fact that your pet bit you after you were wearing the jacket is quite telling about the way the this alpaca is produced. Seems like a really bad supplier

I have an Aero LHB belt that I bought 2nd hand with alpaca lining. Didn't like it, so I bought a few yards of gray wool herringbone material and sent it to Shaul at US Authentic to replace the alpaca. Think it cost me $100 total. Love the LHB, so totally worth it IMO.

My Aero Waterfront & RMC N1 are both alpaca lined, and are both warm jackets. I never wear either without a sweater so itchiness is not an issue.

I'd suggest wearing those Nike or Underarmour long sleeve moisture wicking top underneath your cotton shirt or tee. I think it helps prevent the hair touching your skin through the cotton fabrics and will keep you very warm.

I've not seen alpaca on a close fitting jacket for the very reasons we're reading above. I had Highwayman with an alpaca lining, it was fine, no itchiness, though I tended to wear it with a long sleeve top because it was intended as a cold weather jacket. The snake thing, I really don't know what to do with that...

Goatskin could be a problem as well, I’ve seen a snake eat an entire dead goat on tv, it was an anaconda but still... totally disgusting... Watch out for goatskin jackets.

That really made me laugh out loud!

Regarding alpaca, I've never had any trouble with itchiness. Saying that, the only alpaca that I've had experience with has been in U.S. military jackets/coats from the 1940's and in Buzz Rickson's jackets/coats.

Finally, I wish you all of the very best with your jacket, TheJuniper. That's a tough situation.

This would be my suggestion, better yet, Carhartt Long-sleeve heavyweight T-shirt. These are go-too's for me in Iowa, under a sweatshirt, then a jacket.

My question shoots a little harder towards the intended use of the jacket. I have Tartan-wool lined 4-pocket Aero CR, and it's certainly not a cold-weather jacket for me at all. I know you indicated that your female friend thought the other styles looked to "old" however having a few of these, I find them all a lot more practical when the weather dips below 0C.

I would encourage you to reach out to Carrie for advice at Thurston. She could easily have the jacket re-lined for you. I will say that your photos indicate a good, and rather snug, fit. Good luck with what you decide to do!

Man a snake thinks everything is food. I discount that as anything of significance and totally irrelevant. If the jacket is itchy that's understandable and whatever. But for the life of me why anyone would keep a pet snake I have no idea. Had one in my driveway last year and and I killed it with a shovel, with extreme prejudice.

I would have advised the guy that if he loves everything else about the jacket to just wear it. The shedding and itchiness would calm down over time and use. But nope, the guy made with the hairbrained "treatments" before I got to the end of reading the thread
