looks like an Allesandria. im wearing mine in profile pic. purchased mine in Cleveland ohio from Mike the hatter in early 1970s. I had a beautiful brown angora wool borsalino that got stolen in Greensboro NC in the 1980s. brutal! the moron that stole it probably didn't know what it was. An old Italian gentleman had a small hat store on lorain ave & 117th st. in Cleveland whose lifelong dream was to visit the borsalino factory in Italy but he was afraid to fly.lol after trying on the angora hat several times when in town.(he was teasing me) he finally sold it to me for $200.00. I never pulled cash out of my pocket that fast. very sad loss.

From "Il sole 24" the most authoritative Italian economic newspaper. The news was published yesterday

"This morning the bankruptcy sentence for the Borsalino di Spinetta Marengo arrived. The decision of the Court was expected for months by the 135 employees, the trade unions and the entire territory of Alessandria after the stop to the preventive arrangement procedure a year ago and the reopening of the process with a new industrial plan presented by Philippe Camperio's Haeres Equita , holder of a company leasing contract for the Alessandria company. Borsalino's board of directors, after the crack linked to the events of the Marenco financier two and a half years ago, had asked the Court of Alessandria for a prior arrangement for the company.

In recent months the activity of the plant near Alessandria has continued regularly, volumes have grown with a forecast of turnover for this year exceeding 17 million euros. But the fate of this productive reality remained pending, awaiting the decision of the judge.
For the second time, the Court rejected the request for an agreement for Borsalino: last December, in fact, the negative opinion of the section and the reconfiguration of the process with a new business plan presented last spring, today came the second ruling that clears the road to the arrangement procedure and defines the bankruptcy for the company that boasts 160 years of history and a brand known all over the world. At this point a phase of profound uncertainty began for the Borsalino, with the trade unions - which are currently meeting with the company employees - who called for an urgent meeting of the two bankruptcy curators, Stefano Ambrosini and Paola Barisone. The bankruptcy sentence may not automatically interrupt the company lease contract, even if a tender phase could open at the same time as the contract was granted.

"We have made a garrison and an assembly with the workers, there is great concern for their future, although in this company you work normally and daily", summarizes Maria Iennaco who follows the story for the CGIL. "We asked the two curators appointed by the procedure to meet urgently and we heard Camperio's consultant, who will meet on Thursday, especially to define the position on the continuation of the lease." One thing is certain: workers' representatives and local institutions ask that the court's decision does not have a negative impact on the company's production continuity. "The company must not stop, the whole territory must make sure that the brand remains linked to the Spinetta Marengo factory" adds Iennaco.

The Borsalino brand was taken over by Philippe Camperio last summer directly from Mediocredito, Intesa Sanpaolo Group, a company initially included in the list of creditors"

Everyone can draw their own conclusions.

It was a sad day this monday for the brotherhood. Borsalino was declared bankrupt:

Or this one
http://www.ansa.it/english/news/lif...upt_233b8a79-9787-4b56-b191-353be2935927.html

After a 160 years of hatmaking is was bad management and the machinations of investment companies that got the company on its knees. I do hope that the production side of the business will continue for now, not only for the jobs of the workers, but also because once the knowledge is gone it will be gone forever. And while we already lamented the loss of the quality of the older borsalino hats they still produced some very fine hats indeed to this very day.

Would anyone like to say a few words?

I found this one on ebay. Waiting for its arrival in the meantime here are some previews...

I'll add more pics once it arrives.

It finally made it from Italy to the US. I was expecting a stiff coarse felt but it is thin and incredibly soft and malleable! No damage. The size is about 6 3/8 or 6 1/2.

I think the worry (of the court) is the factory and the workers. It's definitely a bad / sad situation.

I think the worry (of the court) is the factory and the workers. It's definitely a bad / sad situation.
I also think it is essential to keep the factory and the workplaces alive, also because, by dispersing the know-how and the quality of work that derives from tradition, it would be a mortal sin. A definitive blow, after the closure of the Cervo hat factory, to Italian mastery in building hats.
I am sure, however, that someone will try, taking advantage of the opportunity, to acquire the Borsalino brand. Despite the marketing policy, personal opinion, has very little attention to the traditional market and oriented to the "new" use of the hat, in Spineta Marengo they still build unparalleled hats, not all, of course.

Super! Thank you for the detailed photos. My guess is that it's from about the same time period (same paper label) as my three Echter Borsalinos that are date stamped 1929 (see link below). The hand written size would be in the far lower right corner of the paper label but I can't make it out. Can you make out the word directly to the left?

http://germanaustrianhats.invisionz...c/50-borsalino-german-market/page-2#entry1198

Unfortunately all I can make out is N i ? i d ?

While I dont think the factory will close , the present ownership has actualy hurt the company quite a lot. Since the present CEO has taken over , the number of stores that have sold Borsalino hats in Europe and the USA have gone down especialy in the USA. The new ownership is preferring to attend to the higher end of the market that are not true hat wearers but occiaonal hat buyers who might wear a hat once in a while. The classic hat stores are not their true market anymore.

Daniele, The next step is not clear to me. It will be interesting to see the official statement from Borsalino.

I wonder if Cervo will liquidate? That would something to keep an eye on.

Always wonderful to see the really old ones. Pity it isn't your size. I'm curious how it would clean up.
