Scouting anyone?

Eagle Scout and I've been a scout master twice in the intervening years. Great memories and a great organization. Although, I've been disappointed in some of the decisions the National organization has made in the last few years. Since politics are prohibited here on the Lounge I'll leave it at that.

I have my father's scout shirt and hat somewhere and although the boys sometimes grumbled about it, I made my scouts wear the uniform almost all the time.

This pic is a year and a half old now (I've been gone from the site a while), but that's my oldest scout.

Half of the GSA hatchets I have.

Gotta love the old fixed blades...

And a little display I did for my youngest scout's bridging ceremony (all the vintage GSA items are mine).

My youngest scout (But only for a few more months as her little sister starts this summer)

I think I'm even an official GS (had to register or something to help with the troop outtings.

I was thrown out of the 1st Llandaff troop in Cardiff after three weeks for "Having a bad attitude"! My crime was to show the scoutmaster how to do a proper sheepshank knot after he'd made a pig's ear out of it!

My father was ex Royal Navy and we spent many hours tying knots together and I knew how to do them properly using his old navy manual!

Is that a vintage GS dress? My cousin was in the GS, don't recall her uniform looking like that. I still have her GS KFS set somewhere, it came with a red plastic case with a yellow GS symbol on it.

Just some advice, in the BSA we always carried our knifes on the back in case we fell while hiking. It has been known for the knife to cut thru the leather and injure a scout carrying the knife in that position the little girl has hers. Same with the axe.

It is a 1950s/1960s GS uniform.

That was for a presentation she was doing on the history of the GSA for her troop. They don't allow fixed blades or hatches any longer.

Thanks. One of these days I'll get the whole collection out for a sorting. I think I have 2-3 of every style/period. Need to pick out the best, fully restore them, and divest of the rest.

Trying to raise three strong capable daughters. My eldest is definitely the leader of all though.

Well Decodence, between good parenting and strong scouting leadership, you will have very capable, adaptable and self realiant, confident members of society. What more could a parent wish for, apart from health and happiness.

Venture Scout in my late teens and early 20s, before full-time adulting got in the way and organizing camping trips with my buds became a lot harder. We would bash into the patches of jungle behind our neighbourhoods and build shelters out of vines and twigs, collect and boil rainwater, and compare feathersticks we'd make with our plethora of knives.

Unfortunately, Singapore doesn't have much in the way of wilderness, so we got tired of always hanging out in the same campsites and eventually the participation waned. The last camping trip I organized was a year ago, between 3 of my closest friends who wanted to relive the glory days. It was the first time we'd gone camping in over five years and was predictably a miserable affair. My scouting days might be over, but I'll always have those memories.
