I guess it would depend on your definition of vintage. Ostrich leg only goes back to about the 1980's. We used to call them chicken leg. Never see a pair of 1883 anything new for $500.

The Lucchese rep said approx. retail was $500 in 2010 which I imagine was full list.....Sheplers prob sold them for $300 to $350. I imagine it easier to sell ostrich leg than chicken leg!!!

I wouldn't buy Lucchese 1883's in anything let alone Ostrich leg, no more than I would buy those eels.

How would you compare the Lucchese 1883 or 2000 with a US made Dan Post? The Post boots fit me the best of any of the mainstream boot makers.

Dan Post doesn't make boots. They market & sell boots under 4-5 different brand names. The boots are made under contract so the maker/supplier changes with every new contract issued. To keep prices down the makers/suppliers of their boots use manmade materials. Therefore it's impossible to rate their boots with any kind of consistency.

Thoughts on Heritage boots from Austin. Looking for a boot around $450-600, who's the go to guys now a days.
Heritage boots typically get good reviews. Their boots are made in Mexico to high standards. All leather construction, wooden pegs and such. I've never owned any but they appear to be well made boots. I do find it odd when you visit their store, one is not allowed to handle the boots without a salesperson assistance. I understand when I go into a high end music store and they don't want everybody yanking the D-28 off the wall, but a pair of cowboy boots. Also, you can't order from their website, has to be done over the phone.
As far as handmade boots in that price range, you might be better off looking at the secondary market. I think Tecova boots may offer some within that range.

Yeah that is odd about their handling boots policy but man was it ever painful seeing Kurt Russell smash that 150 year old Martin in The Hateful Eight.

I have always liked and worn for years original Lucchese/ Vintage boots and you still can find these worth the money used on Ebay. I agree I would not spend money on the 1883 and especially the 2000 series. Tecovas are nice but I am uncertain how they are going to wear long term. I have one pair of those it will take time.
