Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, a 2017 production which is described as ".. biographical romantic drama" and deals with the last years of actress Gloria Grahame and her younger than her own kid Brit lover. I was not that familiar with the films of Grahame- other than her role as Violet Bick in It's a Wonderful Life. I enjoyed the film: perhaps our Miss Lizzie or someone else who is more familiar with her career than I am can tell me how accurate of a portrayal it was.

Grahame made a bunch of interesting flicks, but I submit that the first one to try and see is In A Lonely Place - I also think it's one of Humphrey Bogart's best films.

But I haven't seen this film yet, so I can't comment on Annette Bening's portrayal.

Last night I watched “Gilbert.”
It’s about Gilbert Gotfried and it was both funny and very charming. Gilbert actually opens up and shared some insight into his life as a traveling entertainer.
One of the many highlights in the movie is when he’s recognized by a fan in a convention center and invited to attend a military cosplay type event. Of course Gilbert takes delight in playfully interacting (and gently mocking) the guys who donned Nazi attire. Later that evening at his performance the camera shows them in the crowd applauding. Afterwards one of them apologized for his uniform, but can’t resist telling Gilbert, “I have a joke for you...” it’s well worth watching and I found it on Hulu.

Okay, technically not a movie but just arrived home from watching Live at the Met....Tosca. This was a stunner from all perspectives...staging, costumes, singing and orchestration. Best $25 entertainment money I have spent in a long time.

"Action in the North Atlantic" - Rousing WB war pic about the Merchant Marine and the convoys facing the Nazi's. Better than average war flick raised up a notch by the performances of Raymond Massey and Humphrey Bogart. Made in '43 when we were still making movies about helping our "Russian Friends". Of course by the '50's some folks involved with this production were accused of being Commie symps and persecuted. Sigh....

The other night, Arrival. We did not like it.
Tonight, Charade, with Cary and Audrey. What a fun movie- had not seen in some time and forgot several key plot points. To paraphrase someone, "It's the best Alfred Hitchcock film never made by Alfred Hitchcock." Part of our on-going movie night with family and friends.

I’m watching Twelve Monkeys tonight.
It’s a favorite of mine not only for the interesting plot but the performances of Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis.
Terry Gilliam directed so it has an off beat appeal. The film was nominated for two Oscars but didn’t win any.
I have the feeling though this is a cult classic amongst movie buffs, but it is kind of scarce in late night cable movie rotations.

"The Prize" 1963 with Paul Newman, Edward G. Robinson and Elke Sommer
  • A solid, if sometimes plodding, "Hitchcock like" movie:
    • Beautiful scenery
    • Beautiful people in beautiful clothes
    • Innocent man unaware initially that he's caught up in an international espionage plot
    • A blonde
    • A story that's more about the journey than the ultimate plot conflict
    • A willingness to walk up to the casual-sex-between-actor line and imply, but not show, it being crossed
  • Elke Sommer was underused and never developed any chemistry with Newman; whereas, the sparks flew between Newman and Diane Baker
  • It appears that if you needed an actor to run a intelligence, espionage or parastatal organization in the late '50s/'60s, you hired Leo G. Carroll
  • Robinson, as always, got more out of the double role than was written, but still, there was too little of him
  • A solid but not perfect entry in the busy, early '60s international intrigue genre

Alexander Waverly (dryly, to Napoleon Solo, who has just described an attempt on his life while on his current mission): "Report any such attempts immediately. Unless, of course, they're successful."

U.N.C.L.E. fans have said for years that it was Carroll's role in North by Northwest that provided the blueprint for Mr. Waverly; but perhaps this film, coming even closer to the point when the TV show was cast, had something to do with it as well.

The Shailene Woodley starrer Divergent, from 2014. I was curious about it, had liked Shailene's performance in Big Little Lies, and it was on TBS yesterday, so I gave it a try . . . and enjoyed it quite a bit. They were sensible about the fighting business, didn't have Shailene's character Tris defeating any trained fighting men in hand-to-hand combat. (There's a scene in her training where she is expected to take on a male opponent, and you'd think that a big-time military organization, which is what the "Dauntless" faction is in their world, would know better than that.) There were unpleasant and evil male characters, but the same was true of female, with Kate Winslet appearing as a sort of HRC clone and leading the "Erudite" faction. Not bad; I may try the remaining 2 in the trilogy.

D.O.A., with Edmond O'Brien, for the millionth time or so.

This is one movie I never get tired of. I wish there was a better-preserved film print somewhere out there. All the public domain DVD releases look pretty lousy. On the other hand, that does make the whole thing feel a little more "gritty."

The last Divergent movie they made was part one of a two-part story (like the Hunger Games), but the franchise petered out and they decided not to make a movie of the final part! The last I heard, they were trying to develop the remaining story into a TV mini-series or something.

"Radius" - An odd little offering on Netflix that starts slow but with an interesting premise. Man wakes up with no memory but any living creature within say 40 feet of him suddenly drops dead save for one woman who, like him, is suffering from amnesia. It's a mystery that slowly ratchets up the tension as authorities get on their tails and of course the label him as a "terrorist" who's armed and dangerous. There are some mighty twists at the end that I won't even hint at. Very low budget pic with NO known actors of any stripe but you could a lot worse if you're bored and need something to watch.
