I’d been on the fence about getting a double rider for my next jacket, and ultimately decided to get a secondhand one and clean it up. I bought this Vintage Schott 618 off of a Chinese rocker in Beijing for $315. It was in quite good condition, and the previous owner had identified the belt buckle as being manufactured in the 1980’s…so I’m guessing that’s the age of the whole jacket.
There were two big cosmetic problems that I wanted to fix : 1.) There was a 6” cut on the back that looked like it had been superglued back together, and 2.) One of the metal buttons on the back had rust in it. I took it to my regular leather repair shop and had them fix it up for $50. Before and after pics here:
I have no idea where this jacket has been over the last 30 years, so largely for psychological reasons, I had to “clean” this jacket at least once to make it mine. I took it to my dry cleaners and had them clean the lining ($8), which surprisingly made the lining and the tag look almost new. Then I gave the whole jacket a wipe down with some "Tarrago Gel Cream Delicate" ($6).
It looks quite nice and cleaned up now. The total cost for the jacket + repairs and cleaning was $379.
Still trying to decide if I like this style, but I can always sell it for around the same price that I bought it. No worries there!
