Here's an English hat ruler. I know all about calculations circumference from length and width but does anyone know how this might work? Is there a calculation achieved by lining up the numbers on the ruler side?

Sorry now I see they are two separate pieces. The ruler would only be able to measure inside (head opening) front to back and side to side. It looks the numbers might match up. Can you try in on a hat?

Hi Anne, it looks as though this is for measuring brims, and maybe crown hight. Judging by the little brass knob, it looks like you could slide the inner part out and put it against the side of the crown with the main part lined up with the brim esge to get an accurate measurement. The measurements on the back are hat hat size relationships to circumference of the head, and the circumference of the block used to make that hat. I would bet that this was probably used in cleaning and reblocking of hats to speed up the process.

Here is a post by Ole regarding a similar U.S. Size, Head, Hat chart.

"More likely the actual size (inside circumference) and the outer circumference of the finished hat. The sweatband does not take up a whole inch in circumference. A 7 1/8 block fits almost perfectly a 7 1/4 hat with sweatband. I think the two sizes are both outer circumferences ... one of the head and the other of the hat. That would at least fit better with the measurements given on the ruler

You could also measure the inside center of the hat (front to back and side to side) and the brim width with the sliding ruler. I posted (see above) a previous post regarding a similar U.S. chart. Not sure if it is correct.

Every now and then I'm fortunate enough to be able to put a rounding jack into the hands of a budding young hat maker who also takes great photographs that epitomize the hat maker's art. Great job Sabreena! Keep up the good work!

Inspired by yet another rainy day in Tennessee, a fully adjustable hat drying rack. Made from an old cabinet door, some 1/2" oak dowel, and a vintage hat stretcher. Voila, no more damp hats taking up valuable bench space.

Thank you! I have a strong desire to try to put them to use (although not entirely capable at this point).
