Some time ago, I was researching Hemingway’s boat for some project. Soon thereafter I started getting pop up ads for 40 foot cabin- cruisers. Hahahaha. I kid you not.

Went back this morning and deleted. I currently have zero social media. I only come to this site and another fantasy writers forum where hardly anyone posts. Ever.
It felt EXTREMELY freeing to get rid of facebook. Again, it was so confusing and time consuming to figure out how to delete. It's under a link that says "let us know." Wonder if that was under a recent algorithm update. Hmm...
It'll be 14 days before they start deleting and then another 90 days before all the information is gone, according to them. Either way the info is out there forever.

That's why I didn't include any personal details when I signed up with Farcebook. I used part of my legal name to make it easier for the right people to find me, but any other information they required (which, surprisingly, was very little) was made up. Someone somewhere might be able to assemble some form of "profile" on me, but it won't be accurate.

Yeah, "when it's gone, it's gone"? Really? Doubt it.
They won't delete anything. I quit farcebook for over 5 years. I deleted everything and supposedly shut down the account. It kept asking me in panicked language if I was sure because once deleted I couldn't get any of it back.
I decided to go back on because our kids are scattering and we now have grandchildren whose pictures regularly appear on there.
Lo and behold, as soon as I typed in my email it popped up with Welcome Back to Facebook. When I finished registering my old posts, pictures and friends list was waiting for me. All of which I carefully deleted when I left 5 or 6 years before.

I almost hate to admit I know this, but it's part of a line from Top Gun (1986) starring Tom Cruise.

This is why thinking people hate these companies. Be it Google's "Don't be evil" or Facebook clearly lying about deleting your information (despite what they claim) - they consistently show us that they are dishonest in their communication to us and their policies.
Some people hate honest profit and honest success - and hate companies simply for being successful - and that's their issue, but most people don't; however, most people do hate what you experienced and it's showing in the massive decline in public opinion these technology companies are rightfully suffering.
Before my time. Well, sorta. That'll be next in the reboot line.
You must skew to the younger side of FL's demographic. Also, since the movie has been a cable staple for decades, many who didn't see it in the theater know it from TV. Anywho, good to have younger blood on the site / I always enjoy your posts.

Top Gun is before your time? They're already working on it.
It was out when I was a kid. Saw it years later. Didn't get the hype or love for it that everyone's had. *shrug* Of course, they're making a reboot. Who's gonna be the star? Justin Beaver? But, then, I've never liked Tom Cruise, so...
Had horrible experiences on Facebook. Was stalked. Took all pictures of myself down. Deleted the app off my phone several years ago when I realized I was waking up, grabbing my phone and getting on Facebook for no reason. It's addicting. And when I would tell people how awful it was back then, they would defend it. I left. No one noticed I was gone. Not one of my so-called "friends." Then all this fiasco. Well, you know the rest.
I guess I'm what's called Gen Z. Not that young. At least not to me. lol And thank you, it's nice to get a compliment once in a while.

I agree on both counts. I saw it because a friend wanted to, and watched it again when it came to cable TV just to verify my opinion that it was not a good movie still held. It did. I also don't get the adoration of Tom Cruise in movies. He's one of those actors who essentially plays himself in every role, and when he tries to create an actual character that's different from himself it becomes obvious he can't act.
Oh, and at this point the new movie will be called Top Gun: Maverick and seems to be more sequel than remake. It will once again star Cruise, but this time he'll allegedly be playing an instructor like Tom Skerrit's "Viper" in the original.
