Those gaberdine trousers are very similar to a pair that my wife bought and altered for me. Mine are made of calico, it's a very strong cotton mix, although not as sturdy as denim. Calico has a linen look to it but it doesn't crease easily like linen. In the first photo you can see how oversize the waist is. What Tina found was very little material beyond the sewn seam, which meant that she couldn't let them out. But the oversized waist meant that she could bring the waist in. The finished look still has a taper but after turning up the hem to make a cuff they are just the job for emphasising the new but 1920's designed shoes. What's more, I have any number of shirts that will complete the look.

Out doing errands this morning in a pair of 1940 Captoe Derby Gunboats. These John McHale shoes are made of Horween Leather and may be the finest vintage gunboats I have seen.

The sole (triple Sole is 5/8 of an inch thick= 16 mm) and the welt (1/4 inch wide= 6.5mm) measurements make them true gunboats.

The shoes received compliments at the hardware, grocery and cobbler shops this morning.

For your consideration, three pair of suede loafers from John Lobb. From right to left, the colors are labeled Olive, Blue and Green. I could not make up my mind so I ordered all three. The only problem with the shoes is that the sole is very thin so if you are walking on an uneven surface for a length of time it becomes uncomfortable. Definitely an indoor shoe in a casual setting

Would a pair of 1940's Gunboats also be suitable for work or are they just a more macho dress shoe? Also, I'd assume the thick sole and welt would make these withstand almost anything. My vintage shoes aren't built like tanks, they're pansy summer shoes that were meant to be worn seasonally. I'd love to find gunboats just like yours in my size, they look incredibly sharp.

Santoni Oxford “Kenton in Black. A simple, a little boring, but an extremely comfortable and functional shoe. I always come back to these shoes for basic wear.

I have noticed that as I take steps on hard surfaces with my 1940's Nunn-bushes it makes a crackling sound. It isn't the rubber heels making the sound, but the cork outsoles. What's causing this sound and what actions can I take towards diminishing it, assuming something bad may happen to the shoes?

I picked these Red Wing 3112 up at a thrift store yesterday. They were made in 2004.
