Here's another one with a story that I picked up a few days ago. I don't have a clue what that story is though. It's a 2009 Taurus PT-1911 or used to be.

There are some crankier members who feel that the replacement of the M1 was the beginning of the end of the world but most of the guys have more sense. My web name is there for a reason.
By the time I hit the service in 68, the M16 was in. Looking at it now with more educated eyes, I wish that the military had gone with a larger bore and bullet. Presently I would prefer something like the 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC, with my preference leaning toward the 6.5 and it's longer range potential with a 123 gr bullet. Combat load weight would be upped a little, but I would rather have the extra power.

A few months later when in OCS we had to qualify with the S&W Combat Masterpiece, which I liked since I owned a K 38 I had purchased about a year earlier, and had grown up shooting a K 22 my dad had. I never cared for the 9mm Beretta. Being a medical officer we would only be issued arms if in a place where we might have to conduct defensive operations, most probably in a bug out situation, so most folks in the USAF medical services were not well trained in small arms.

The British triedafter both World Wars to move to a smaller cartridge, and the US' M1 Garand was originally designed for a smaller round. The Garand was re-engineered for the .30-06 to avoid the problem of changing rounds with an upcoming war looming. After WW2 the Brits came up with a round that is almost identical to the existing 6.8 SPC round [the original FAL was called the CAL and designed around this cartridge] but the US shoved the .308 down NATOs throat.

PAVN M44.jpg

looking down the sights on a Russian M44 rifle , caliber 7.62x54R

with the folding bayonet in the open position , these rifles were designed to fire with the bayonet extended.

These were also heavily used by the VC / PAVN / Militia units during the Vietnam War, many were also brought back as war trophies found in enemy weapons caches.
