Vintage spectators worn this morning to a meeting.

Oodles of folks commented on the shoes. Only the two older, classy dressed women knew them as spectators.

My cobbler and I have worked to get these gorgeous shoes ready for the warmer weather. Bring the summer on!

These shoes are just back from the cobbler. A terrific pair of NOS Allen Edmonds. Allen Edmonds confirmed that these are late 50's vintage.

I needed to have the heels reviewed and Vibram rubber sole protectors applied. The shoes had been thoroughly conditioned. I suspect they will need more this evening. I will use some Saphire gloss wax polish before wearing them out on an adventure. Classic looking toe box.

That's a fine looking pair of shoes, Eric. Sadly, our local cobbler died last spring and the town has been left without shoe repair services.

I thrifted this pair of Dominican made Sebago Spinnaker Docksides the other day.

Good day folks. Earlier today I was sporting my vintage Allen Edmonds dress casual black shoes.

This model of a split toe blutcher has been in the Allen Edmond line (on and off) for quite some time. Check out a history of the derby here - http://shoegazing.se/english/2017/10/29/history-the-split-toe-derby/ .

I have already posted a couple of pics of the shoes being picked up from my cobbler getting vibram sole protectors and replacement heels attached.

These shoes are very comfy and the durable, casual dress shoes will get a lot of wear time off the shoes on my shoe rack.

Allan Edmonds. Love these shoes. I feel torn every time I wear them. I love them but never seen to wear them. Only been on my feet half a dozen times. I keep thinking about putting them up for trade for something similar in straight brown so I can get more mileage out of them.

Vintage British Walkers were my shoes of choice for a morning meeting.

These split toe derby's have a mahogany hue to the leather. While grabbing the pics to share I noticed that they needs some care. The shoes are soaking up some Cadillac Conditioner (uppers, insides and sole) on my bench. Once most of the conditioner soaks in I will use some hued cream on the shoes. That should cover the ding in the toe and even the leather color. A clear wax polish and a bunch of brushing and they should be good to go for the next adventure.

Not high end shoes, but they are sharp to my eyes.

Johnny; I like the vintage inspired spectators. They are bold in that they are not a straight or plain brown shoe. At my house brown shoes and spectators both get worn. Last weekend I was at a meeting and the plain hued shoes got worn and then for the evening festivities (social time/dinner/jazz music) the spectators got the call. I did not change my outfit, just shoes. Folks complimented me on my evening attire.

I say keep the shoes as you already have the investment in them. Get a brown pair that you will enjoy and make occasions to wear them. I am a short balding guy, but I do not have to be a boring/predictable old balding guy.

I enjoy your posts Johnny. Wear your spiffy VS hats and shoes in good health sir.

I agree with what Eric said about your spectators. They are very nice repros, and I don't see why you can't make opportunities to wear them (jazz club, cocktail party, a leisure sporting event, SPECTATING a sport, dances, the list goes on). Since you already have the investment paid, I'd make as much use of 'em as you can.

Finding outfits to wear spectators with may seem difficult, because they're perhaps a very anachronistic and unusual style in today's wardrobes, and you expect them to be worn under boaters and expensive suits, like in the old Esquire/Apparel Arts illustrations. However, your specs would work very well even under a casual/smart attire. Wear these with pride!

Wait till I rock these with my new Levis Trucker jacket I got for Fathers Day.

Johnny; On my Allen Edmonds leather I use Cadillac Conditioner or the Allen Edmonds Conditioner, Allen Edmond cremes or I use the Saphire color chart to match the shoes at my cobbler's. The on-line chart works, but I have found seeing it in person and running my choice by the owners wife to provide better results. My color matches tend to run darker than needed. The Saphire brand applies "creamier" and without as much color hue for the shoe. The Saphire colors apply evenly and easily. Granted I am the only person on the earth who looks at my shoes that closely. Within a couple feet I see the difference. You would have to be laying down staring at my shoes to see it. Back to topic, I use a clear wax polish from Saphire to give shine to me shoes (regardless of brand). Other leathers need different treatment. On black shoes I use the Allen Edmonds black creme as I picked up a big bottle and have yet to use it up. When it is used up I will make a decision.

Over the past year I have collected perhaps a half dozen different edge trim treatments (the color dyes in the bottles with the brush applicators). I think that a clean hued and colored edge really makes the shoe pop.

I hope this helps Johnny. Most of the stuff above I have mimiced after following the shoe repair thread on the Style Fourm for a while. Shoe care I do every couple weeks. It brings back memories of my childhood working on my "school leather shoes" Sunday evenings. My father, a US Air Force Academy grad, helped his boys prepare for the upcoming week. Our shoes did shine.

Yes, for a shoe conditioner that leaves shoes shiny, restores the integrity of the leather and does not interfere with color, as Eric stated, Cadillac Shoe and Boot are the way to go. I got an 8 oz bottle for $9 on ebay and it works as intended. I use it for all things leather (sweatbands, shoes, my briefcase, jackets). Giving your kicks (especially a vintage pair) a good soaking in Cadillac will add life to them.

Funny thing happened today. I was wearing my spectators and received compliments from a college-aged man. He said that he hoped I would wear the spectators more often, and that he really liked the sight of them. Trouble is he referred to them as spats.
