Knox 20 Homburg conversion/restoration for fellow lounger . Brim was cracked open and repaired in the past on back side of brim curl about 6”. Brim as is was only 2 1/2 to begin with and after trimming away damaged area ended up with 2 1/8.
Left the brim w a slight curl so it can be worn w brim up or down. Wind cord added too.

Here's a tan Stagecoach that Bob Hufford gave me sometime back. It started out as a moth bitten size 7 which I converted and resized originally on a #52 block. I like straight crowns but to me the #52 and the recreasing didn't exactly appeal to me, (sometimes crowns can be too boxy). So, I'm redoing it on a plastic straight sided dome. Seems like a good enough compromise between a #51 and a #52 block.
Check out the mothing. Some of it's pretty deep with one that goes all the way through on the brim. But, I like saving hats like this if they can be salvaged...

Moving right along with this Stagecoach. It's pretty faded and moth bitten so it's not going to be a perfect hat by any stretch. In any event I'm still going to work at it to make it a decent hat. I did some more work on it and I got the brim to where it's not rigid as it once was. Also did some more sanding to take down the thickness a bit more. Afterward a little more finish sanding until I got the felt nice and smooth to the touch. I had to go easier on the crown, though, because of the mothing but I did get it to where it's also soft and smooth.
I'm wanting to reuse the original thin ribbon, but there's a problem. This hat was originally a size 7 and it's now a 7 1/4. The ribbon is too short so I might have to do some finangling to the bow to try and make this work...
I've got the new sweat cut to size. I just have to put in the reed and sew everything up...notice the moth hole on the brim

Thank you Bob. I saved some of the fluff just for that purpose. It should be a pretty easy fix. But, I just might leave that hole in there. I'll explain later if I decide to leave it.

The inside is unfinished but not badly faded. A little pouncing will make it nice and smooth. But, I kinda like the longer hair look on the crown. Depending on what the hat looks like after it dries I'm thinking of leaving it unfinished. I like the look.....it's brushed down so you can't see much of the longer hair finish very well from the picture.

Thank you Bowen. Here's the website for the plastic hat shapers. I have some vintage wooden blocks, including a #51 and a #52, but I really like the open crown shape of this straight sided dome. I don't care much for the plastic it's made from and the flange can get in the way when you're tugging and pulling on the felt, but I've learned to work around that.

Here it is. Almost finished with my Stagecoach Long Hair conversion and it's definitely a favorite. I just have to sew on the ribbon. The ribbon and bow came off of a modern Whippet. This is one nice hat. I'm pretty happy with the way it came out. As I said, this hat was a faded out and moth bitten 6 3/4 that was gifted to me by Bob Hufford. This one I turned inside out because the outside was so faded. I always liked a longhair look and wondered what it would look like that way. After I reblocked it, sizing it up to a 7 1/4, I pounced the brim down thinner until it was soft and pliable. The crown, I gently "combed" with a yellow sponge to get the fur to lay down nice and smooth, and then I went over it with a hat brush. The open crown on this one is somewhere around 6 inches tall. Since I put a wide ribbon on it I creased the hat 5 inches tall at the pinch with a rake sloping back to 4 inches tall. The snap brim is 2 3/4....the ribbon is not attached in these pictures. I'll do that tomorrow.
