Thanks for your compliment & I'm glad the swatch comparisons helped you. Since swatches are just scrap trimmings & usually small it always helps me when I can compare them to a hat of mine in a known color. It eliminates the variances from camera lenses, metering, computer monitors, etc.

Right! But, even with swatches here on hand and your helpful image notes, I am going to have a harder time envisioning what 'white' I really do want, that will go best with my coloring and typical palette, etc. "Gray" came a lot more intuitively to me! And "white" seems more apt go go way wrong-er, if mis-chosen? All I have to go by here at home is a sorta pink-ish Stetson "Silver Belly" Stratoliner, the overall quality and presentation of which is what catalyzed my determination to look to custom makers.

Can you imagine trying to describe or understand the color of olive?

I have one in granite from another hatter. Granite has a brown undertone in low light conditions, something I didn't expect. I would like to see a swatch comparison between granite & limestone. Limestone is something I would expect to have a light brown or tannish undertone, but maybe not?

Michael spoke of Granite's brown undertones in our first exchange, so I was somewhat prepared. I also have Stetson's Caribou on hand (a favorite felt color), against which the Granite swatch's brown-ness was immediately notable. Still and all, the hat reads as primarily 'gray', while the warmth brought by the gray serves me well.

I am enjoying the contrast/compare of the two same-ribboned hats even more than I'd expected to, and am fascinated at how this Steel hat-- with almost identical specs-- presents as a whole other order of... something.

The knockabout Granite hat is probably more 'me' (although the additional weeks of familiarity likely inform this impression), while this Steel one makes me sit up and take notice in a totally different way. The additional 1/4" on the brim and especially the color combination are at once more austere. A stand-out!

Two hats created weeks apart, each with a steel ribbon sporting whatever-this-bow-is:








This will possibly make some of the viewing audience cringe, but I wanted to see the bows lined up, and the interplay of colors, in identical (if changing!) lighting conditions.

[No hats were even mildly sqwunched in the posing of these images.]












I don't have a post-able On Head image of the steel hat yet, but my oh my is it grand. It's already convinced me to snap its brim....

I am so glad I found Mr. Gannon, here through y'all. Thanks again!

Thanks much! The Steel often gives off more of a blue effect in person (possibly not least because I'm usually wearing something blue!); I'll try to capture that better at some point. These hats are truly stunners. I know I'm repeating myself, but I love the clarity of Michael's design and execution. That the modern hat(s) I fumbled my way towards turn out to evoke classic styles of yore? All the better!

Meanwhile, projecting ahead to a lighter hat (both in hue and in felt weight), I remain totally lost. Even with swatches at hand, I waver from day to day, sometimes more rapidly.

I love, but love, Natural, but want more of a departure from what I already have. I think?

So have narrowed it down to Sand, Silverbelly, or Bone [ie, ruled out Silvermist and Sahara]. For now.

I keep staring at various Swatch and/or Hat pictures in varied light...

On the beaver felt hues available from Winchester my all time fav is still dove. Art Fawcett still offers this felt and it kicks. It is a lighter gray that when paired with different ribbon treatments it can be very versatile. Warm/cool attire- just seems to work with this very light gray.

According to Art his once proprietary colors are now available from Winchester to any hatter who wants them; however, there is a substantial minimum order (as I recall it was over 100 hat bodies!) for those colors, which includes dove. All of which is to say Gannon might not be able to make you a dove gray hat.

Just to add my own opinion; aside from dove, my personal favorite is bone.

Looking forward to seeing whatever color you decide upon.

Scuttle; I am not sure how I can assist other than to say get one of each.



Above is l-r silverbelly, bone and silvermist. The pic accurately shows silverbelly to have a tanish hue, the bone to have a "bone-ish" hue and the silvermist to have a blue-ish hue. If I had to choose one hat for travel with a variety of attire I would go for the silverbelly. I paired it with a charcoal ribbon to tame the tanish hue and better allow it to pair with navy blue or blacks.

That said the bone and silvermist stand tall.

Yes, that's what I've gleaned. However, time is on my side (I'm not in a hurry); perhaps there will be other options by the time I go for a Next Hat.

I'd say, "If only...", but that would actually not serve me well over the long term.

Whatever the hobby, inclination, or object(s) of my affection, I have learned I become most attached to that which I use regularly, and fare better with well-chosen, exemplary go-tos than a broad(er) in-home decision tree! Worse yet (for me and my personality) is any object that evokes 'should' when it comes to its use or wear, based on its cost and/or objective quality vs. what I actually keen towards.... Of course, it is often helpful, and sometimes necessary, to have a selection from which to choose for those go-tos to reveal themselves through repeated selection.

So, I'm hoping to make as an informed-- possibly even Inspired!-- choice, and enjoy my (one?!) lighter-colored Gannon from here on out.

These are fun decisions.

Whenever it's time for a next step, I think I'll find out what hues of blue ribbon Michael has available in my preferred range of widths, and compare the blue(s) against bone, silverbelly, and sand, respectively.

With my first two hats, steel ribbon brings out the blue in the steel and granite felts, and looks bluer itself against their background. With these lighter-colored felts, steel ribbon is decidedly gray. I'm going to want more Blue-- y'know, for the @Cornshucker77 Effect.

Love your hat. Ribbon treatment is superb. The pin is cool - World War II's "V for Victory" campaign was a strokes of genius that served to unite and inspire millions.

Thanks Eric. The pin really did come from a unique time in US history (not to mention a phenomenal time for fedoras). I've had it for a while but until this morning couldn't figure out how to attach it without poking a hole through anything. It's likely going to move to my second Gannon, a steel grey.

Here goes: I received my (very early) birthday and Christmas present yesterday: this whiskey-colored beauty from Gannon. I couldn't be happier with the hat or with the process leading up to it. I doubt this will surprise anyone, but Michael was wonderful to work with.

Congrats sir on the new Gannon fedora. The whiskey curled brimmed fedora is GRAND! It is a gorgeous hat that I see can be frequently reached for many adventures.

Since Moon has departed Michael of Gannon Hats is not promoted as much this forum. I wondered the other day what he is up to and am glad to see he is still producing stellar work.

I, for one, am very impressed with Michael's work. I was slow coming to the conclusion, but after 2 hats the deal is sealed. Excellent pouncing, attention to detail and artistry. Michael has the touch. If I had the $$$$ I'd have customs on order with him all the time.

Of course, there are other hatters about whom I feel similarly...

And 7 weeks return on a grand custom? How can you beat that?

I haven't logged into this forum in a while. What happened to Moon?
