Camping trip cut short due to heavy smoke from a forest fire just outside of Yosemite. Nice, if abbreviated, trip. No regrets on my choice of hat: Resistol 4X

He mostly kept quiet. Not a bad strategy. He seams like a good kid; hard to believe we were that age once ourselves.

Indeed a good strategy, and quiet respect is something that's rare in younger folks these days. I struggled for several years with my daughter's choices of boyfriends, one of whom I literally picked up by the belt and removed from my home after he was brazen (foolish?) enough to back-talk me. Luckily she found a good-mannered young man who was raised right. He's not perfect, but he is a good man, a hard worker, and takes good care of my daughter and grandkids.

To bring my sidetrack back on topic, he usually wears ball caps, but frequently will wear a western straw or felt hat, so all is not lost!

He was very nervous, a bit awkward, and mostly quiet when around me. My wife is much better at putting people at ease. I wasn’t trying to stress the guy, I’m just not as outgoing as my wife. Heck, I even removed my gun when we were trying to get to know him (my wife said he was staring at it earlier and suggested it might have contributed to his nervousness). Weird.

From the little I could tell, he seemed like a good kid. I let my daughter know that I expect him to formally ask my permission and that didn’t happen so I still have some time. I hope they go slow and get to know each other better before they move forward. They’ve been seeing each other for almost two years, but they’re so young; why rush?

A friend of mine, Norberto, told me how his daughter's boyfriend asked for her hand in marriage.
He also told him they were too young, why rush? Get a place to live in, first, he said.
So the guy came to see him the following weekend. He'd already bought a beautiful house.
So Norberto, more than a little alarmed, tried to delay again by saying "take your time, furnish the place, what's the hurry?"
The following week the kid came back with pictures of a professionally furnished house.

"Okay, but what's my daughter gonna move around in?", to which the kid, anticipating Norberto's next move, showed him a beautiful Mercedes parked in the driveway.

"Damn kid has more money than I do, I had to give my consent," Norberto told me, looking down at his feet. :D

"Removed" as in you took it off and stored it properly, or "removed" as in you took it out of it's holster and laid it on the table in front of him? :D

My wife and I dated a little over a year-and-a-half before we got married. Both sets of parents thought we were too young, but August 22nd will be our 37th anniversary as husband and wife. Why rush? Why wait? ;)

We also met a very nice young family from Holland camping and they became very cold and aloof when they saw my revolver. It was just for snakes. I was raised around guns but I certainly didn’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.

You have to remember that in Europe guns are very uncommon, Brent. In Mexico you are allowed to carry them only on your way to the practice range, and you have to register them in the army. Even so, certain calibers are only to be used by the armed forces, and machine guns are forbidden.
Bodyguards have to get a very special permit.
Anyone openly carrying a gun in Mexico is therefore suspected of being either a cop, a bodyguard or a criminal, a violent person, someone to be stayed away from.
On top of that, you look from your pics to be big and strong.
I would probably be circumspect around you too, if I were dating your daughter. :)
