Vet having actually wear a m65

Hi,

If one of you has actually wore a M65 in the army, i am wondering about the velcro on the sleeves.

I have been wearing one ( a copy) a lot the past 3 years and the velcro never stay in place. I have to constantly readjust it. Was it the same to you with an authentic jacket in a military environement (in the army)?

Is your M65 made by Alpha Industries.? military grade velcro is good stuff & usually doesn't budge. You could remove the velcro on your jacket & replace it with better quality stuff.

Alpha Industries' M65 jackets are made to military specs so the velcro should be OK but if you've been using it a lot, it could simply be weakened by wear. If you know how to sew, it won't be too difficult to replace.

Once adjusted for my size, mine never moved. Wore the same one for 8 years in service. Was quite faded by the end but was never questioned about it. On a side note, the liner was useless in German winters. Froze my ass off for the 4 years stationed there.

On a side note do you know what the triangle on the cuff is for?
I heard several stories mainly about snipers with specific gloves.

The triangular pull out out part of the cuff is indeed to velcro onto gloves & give a better seal against the elements entering the sleeve. I don't believe snipers used these jackets anyway,they have their own specific gear.

I have an Alpha from 3 years ago. The quality is great and the Velcro is very secure.

I have two issue M65 jackets. Didn't wear them after my first year or so when I got my wings--wore a flight jacket after that. Have worn them quite a bit after discharge and never had a problem with the Velcro.

(Not a vet but have a 1969? issue M-65) It really depends on what kind of jacket you've got. I've got two M-65s, one from the Vietnam era and one from the 80s or 90s (Woodland). Generally speaking, the older and more well used jacket is probably going to have 'weaker' velcro. So just as an example, my woodland M-65 is in fantastic shape (bought from a surplus store for $10) but the OG-107 jacket is in pretty bad shape.

Mine never moved either......wore an M-65 for many years. The M-51 were still being issued when I went in. I preferred the M-51 and so many others did also and we scoured every military surplus store looking for them too. They starched up better. Eventually the M-65 won out.

What made you like the M-51 better and what made it more popular in general? (Aside from that they starched up better)

Looked better, not as bulky, pointed collar that laid flat. Button cuffs. Velcro wasn't liked in the bush, catch it on something, it separates and you have loss of concealment because of the sound it made. (If it isn't broke, don't fix it) The military has a tendency to ignore that. I don't know if ever I was asked or knew someone else who was asked before a change was made for our opinion.

BTW, I cut the hood out of my collar on the M-65 and many others did also just so the collar would lay flat.

One more thing, the hood was a worthless POS anyway on the M-65!!! The button on hood for the M-51 was heavier, better for winter and took any rain far better also.
