Put the jacket on then button it up, check your appearance in front of a mirror. now carefully position the overlapped part of the jacket so that it's comfortable on and doesn't look like it's in any way askew. To sew a jacket button back on and to allow for the extra material thickness, all you do is create a shank, that's to say a gap between the button and the jacket. And to do that all you have to do is sew the button on using a matchstick/toothpick/sewing machine needle over the button. Sew over the matchstick then when finished, withdraw the matchstick, then wind a long length of thread around the sewn button, between button and the jacket.
