Short answer: no.

Long answer: sure, if you sat there all day flipping the brim up and down, you could wear a weak spot into the felt. And over time, the brim will lose the flange. In the big scheme of things, if you flip it down one week and go back the next, you're not really doing anything that will harm the felt. It's generally advised to un-snap the brim for storage, or drying after exposure to rain, for example.

Another question; regarding crown height for a teardrop shape. I shaped mine so the front of the crown is at 4 1/4" and the back at 3 7/8". I'm now thinking this is a little low for the classic teardrop OR look.
Can you guys chime in with your crown heights or what measurements you think is good for the classic TD OR look?

Well, mine is a diamond but, same difference.

it's just a hair under 4 1/4" and works for me.

Hi All!
My first and latest contri for this thread : Just got it today, still have to investigate the history as there was a non-info from a state hand off.
All I know is that it's a : Royal Stetson OR from an earlier period.
Yes I know nothing really big to brag about, but am glad and happy this came my way for my newly found hobby.

May I present the Slate!.........san's wind cord and pin (period correct?)

Welcome to the lounge is all I can say really. I'm not at all versed in the OR-lore. Other members are far better equipped to chime in on the fine art of stetson-determination. Looks like you've got yourself a good looking hat, which is what really matters. Congrats. Another sized 7 member; competition is on the horizon...

Speaking of Open Roads, I'll have more in the "Conversion Corral" later....this is my fourth and current project. This is an earlier '60s Royal Stetson OR that started out as a 7 1/8 LO. Too small for me. I've been putting this project off for too long. I finally got around to taking it apart to do a reblock and size up to fit my 7 1/4 hat size. Looks like it's going maintain its original 2 5/8 brim width. The original ribbon and bow should still work and go back on. My only concern at this point is whether the wind trolley will still fit. Obviously, the original sweat isn't going to fit so I'll be putting in a new one. I do have an idea I'm considering to incorporate the old sweat in with the new one...

I'll post updates in the Conversion Corral later.

Teardrop is my preferred crease. I usually do 4 3/4 inches at the pinch with a rake sloping to 4 in the back. It's an especially nice deep crease if the open crown height is at 5 3/4 - 6 inches tall, but I also use it on open crown heights at 5 1/2 inches.

That's a good looking OR. Probably from the mid 50's to early 60's. Royal quality hats listed for around $10.00 during this period.

Thank you for the compliments fellas! Hmmm it just dawn on me that those inside pictures under the sweat band of the hats or at least certain ones that still have the paper intact would have the size, model and price tag.

Do they still do that at the latest! I think its a great idea of the past to have done that. The newer ones you wont be able to remember unless you have a receipt or record/tags etc. That’s how fine hats were treated back then and it just goes to show the intimate passion take in their craft.

I didnt think i will able to get one in this condition and state in age. It’s nothing compared to some if not most of what you or the other fellas have here. I am happy to discover this place to learn and experience the real deal with these hats and amongst others made. This place is cool with a bunch of fun and passionate members who loves and take great interest with their hats of all different makes and models, similar to the other forums I frequently hang out guitars and cars

I usually play between a couple of size depending on the style/model make. So in other words I can get away with a 7 or 7 1/8 with the odd 7 1/4 at times if i like it, so as i can tack in and slip a strip padding inside the sweatband if needed.

Here's my early '60s Royal Stetson OR after I took it completely apart and gave it a reblocking and size up from a 7 1/8 LO to a 7 1/4...

On the block, 23 1/4 inches

Off the block with temporary basting stitches to hold the new sweat in place for permanent stitches

Back together again. Except for the original sweat I reused everything that was original to the hat, even the 7 1/8 LO size tag. I sized it up to 7 1/4 to fit me....

I was surprised that I was able to reuse the Wind Trolley. It went back on, though.
