Here's a question for the assembled peanut gallery that only requires your opinion:
Tomorrow I am heading out for a long weekend men's retreat in southern New York. It's a nice, remote area in the woods on a lake, with no cell towers ("no service area") and no Internet. It's a bit rustic, and dormitory-style lodging. Previous years I wouldn't think twice about it, and would wear a baseball hat. Now that my dermatologist has recommended wearing a "real" hat, I'm undecided as to which I should wear. I can only take one, so I must decide which hat will be able to withstand the possible rigors of near-campstyle living. My choices are:
Akubra Campdraft
Stetson bush hat
Nameless slouch/bush hat (with sunshield neck guard)
One of my more "formal" hats (not straw)
What would you take/wear?

I took an old western that was converted to an Outback style hat and it did a great job. No rain... so in hindsight I wish I had brought something a little more lightweight like your Campdraft, though.

As much as I don't like the way it looks on me, I think I'm going to go with the Stetson All-American (made in China!), as it's crushable, lightweight, impregnated with Permethrin (insect repellent), has a chin strap, and cost me only $12. I think it will be perfect!
without having the hat in my hands and only having a picture showing the size as Stetson 7/8 long oval and seller doesn't know what size it is how can we tell if it is a 7 7/8 of a 6 7/8 I know this is a stupid question for all you knowledgeable hat collectors

My bet is that it's 6-7/8. You can have the seller measure the distance across the opening for your head, front to back and side to side... from the edge of the leather sweatband across to the other side.

Thinking about picking up one of those BC Hats Conner suede numbers, outback kind, for hiking/fishing/camping this fall. You guys ever have a suede hat? This one's I think 3" brim, so it will be good cover. I'm just wondering about the comfort level. I have the option for some strange colors to boot: "Chocolate" or "Bark" or "Moose."

A 7 7/8 is a one in 10,000 hat...maybe a bit of an overstatement, but not by much. Almost without doubt this is a 6 7/8 (emphasis on the almost).

I have had a suede hat in the past and worn it hiking and camping. Nothing wrong with it and perfectly serviceable. Treated it same as a Tilley hat. Go for it if that’s what you want. Just post it up and give us a review when you get it.

I had a BC stockman hat (sounds like the hat you're refering to) & it was comfortable from the start. 3" brim & 4" crown with fencing wire in the brim so you can shape it as you like. They are made from thick stiffish leather so a little heavy & a touch too warm in hot weather. I ended up coating it in sno-seal & it made an excellent rain hat for several years, especially good in strong winds as it didn't collapse or flop about lke many other Aussie leather hats.
Question for everyone. I'm going to sell my Stetson Gun Club and want to see what you all think would be a fair price to ask. It is a size 59 and has a small blemish on the side which you can see in the photo. Other than that it is in very good shape.
So what do you think?

I am with Ignacio Reyes, my Mexico City hatter. I cleaned my Hardeman in white gasoline, but the ribbon and brim binding did not clean totally. Ignacio put some drops of ammonia in a bit of water, and then rubbed the binding with it. Then he took the ribbon off, and washed it in the ammonia water. He says if the solution is too strong, the ribbon will be "burned". He says 10 drops of ammonia per 1/4 liter of water is good. All the stains, including the sweat stains in the ribbon, disappeared.
He also told me he doesn't stitch the ribbon to the front part of the hat, because that will let the sweat of the forehead go through the felt and stain the ribbon.
I don't know which of you guys knew about this, but I hope this might be my first tip to some who have given me many.

Those are actually not crusher caps. They are officers' caps.
What's the difference? Crushers were the result of officers pulling headphones down over them and 'crushing' the framework. Then officers began to tear or cut out some or all of the framework to better accommodate the headphones. Shortly after that they had them made with little or no framework by hatters of the time.
