anyone wear grey hair?

Well I've bought a box of dye but haven't used it yet. I did get a semi permanent dye thinking it might get me past the weirdest of the growing out phase. I'm also trying to figure out a nice sophisticated cut that will be age appropriate without being aging. I guess a bob?

I wear what's flattering to my face, not age. Maybe you can think of it that way, too?

Great thread. My problem isn't color so much as texture. My original-issue hair was fine and nearly perfectly straight, and I would cut it in various cute short bobs (think Louise Brooks or Vidal Sassoon sculptural looks). I'm in my late forties now, and it is becoming coarser and wavier. (I imagine this is the effect of the grays, which don't show much.) For a couple of years now I've had a sticky-out "wing" over my right ear which is driving me mad.

After spending some time on the Lounge though, I think I may have a solution: a flower barrette to keep that wing pinned down and back. Now I can grow it a bit longer and see what it "does," and see if my other waves and the flower add up to a new, feminine style.

My hair's natural color now is silver in front and sort of a calico gray and dark blonde in back. I started going gray in my late 20s, with a Loch Ness Monster stripe of gray on one temple - it would curl much more than the rest of my hair and stick out in sections through the rest of my hair. I had fun braiding my hair to show it off.
Then I had professionally colored hair (red, for a change) for a while, starting when I was still mostly dark blonde (except for Nessie). I got tired of the fuss and $$$$ and stopped coloring it. I had no idea that my hair had gotten so light under all that red! I had a huge skunk stripe for the longest time.
At a music rehearsal, I was sitting pretty much in the middle of the group, and the director (who I knew quite well) announced that the dividing line for the two sections would be "that skunk stripe." A good laugh!

Thoroughly enjoyed going through this thread to hear how ladies have been dealing with the grayness of life, ha. I haven't been on these forums in a long time - oh what I've missed!

In my absence, I have gone to probably 60% gray at age 45. The streaks I have are white and I LOVE THEM. It makes me feel diabolical or something. But of course, the rest are odd strands sprinkled throughout the dark natural color which gives me the look of having walked through ash or having powder dumped on my head. My fingers are crossed that one day (soon!) it will go completely white. I love white hair - I think it is so striking. It's this in-between phase that's frustrating. I haven't even had much problem with texture changes - the white is the same fine curl as the rest.

My question is this - has anyone tried manic panic or other vegetable dyes on their gray? I am curious about anyone's experiments with that. Haven't had much success locating anything on the web.

I havent been around here for a while, and this is the first thread I looked at tonight. Then i noticed that I posted in this thread just over a year ago, because i had decided to let the grey fall where it may, and stop dying..and i am happy to say, I HAVE NOT CAVED! yay ! and a year later..the sky has not fallen in. I really do not have anymore grey now then i had in those first couple months. Most of it is still on my right temple, but i have just changed the way i part my hair. But 2 things I have learned...#1, that without the dye ( which i have used consistently since 16) my hair is so SOFT and shiny. wow. I have always battled frizziness..but no more. and #2 my dark brown hair is DARK. I had no idea my hair was so dark..lol.I am loving the rich colour and in fact , it is so healthy, that at 46, I am actually growing my hair long again. Best beauty decision ever.

I've been going grey for close to a decade now (and I'm not THAT old). At first, I started with bleaching coupled with blonding, so that the grays would be camouflaged, but it takes such a toll on your hair. I wouldn't recommend anyone try the same approach for sure. Now I just use a color to match my natural hair but have to do it more often. I'm not ready to let it go just yet

Do mine at home, every eight weeks or so. Garnier #50, $6.99 at the drug store. I'm not trying to look younger, I just don't want to look like Susan Sontag.

Around $8 a month at home (12 x 8=$96)

That depends. Sometimes it's just concealer spray and a pack of henna powder for a few bucks. But that's just to fix some minor greyness. For severe cases, you should definitely ask a hairstylist.
I started getting gray in my 20s, what a disappointment for a young girl... But nowadays there is a variety of articles like this, for example, which can help with this problem.

I got a patch of grey right in the front middle of my head when I was seventeen. Been dying it ever since, and now my greys have tripled in the last year. I am much older now but have not embraced my grey's just yet. Maybe never will..I'm now seeing a professional and paying $40 once a month or so. I use the touch up spray in between.

This is actually my goal to look like Susan Sontag now that my grey is coming out more . I have a bit more grey in the front of my hair but not as much as Susan's but am hoping for more in the future. And style it with a lady pomp or a barrel roll hairstyle.
