Lots of unnecessary aggression in this thread, coupled with counterproductive hyperbole and blatant misinformation (from both sides of the debate). IMHO:

1. Shinki HH is NOT objectively better than Horween HH.

2. Horween HH is NOT objectively better than Shinki HH.

3. Shinki HH is certainly NOT heavier than most Horween HHs.

4. HH weight does NOT equate to quality, and heavier hides are NOT inherently better quality.

5. Shinki employs different -- NOT better, but different -- production methods as compared to Horween.

6. Shinki HH takes longer to produce as compared to Horween HHs.

7. Longer production methods are NOT objectively better.

8. Shinki HH is more expensive to purchase by manufacturers as compared to Horween HHs.

9. A more expensive HH is NOT objectively or inherently better quality.

10. Shinki HH is NOT readily available in abundant supply and NOT used by countless manufacturers.

11. Horween HH is much more available as compared to Shinki HH.

12. A less available HH is NOT objectively or inherently better.

13. Horween has been producing HH for considerably longer than Shinki, and Horween makes a damn fine leather.

In the end, this debate is primarily about subjective personal preferences. Passive aggressive attempts to undermine or disprove subjective personal preferences are misguided and pointless.

I like Horween CXL Steer and FQHH, the heavy stuff especially. I have yet to handle shinki leather in person, but I want to, and I think it looks outstanding. Reports suggest it is good in person as well. I'm 99% sure I'll like it. I see no point in arguing which is better. When I get the experience, I'll know which I prefer. That's really what I care about.

I have never been a fan of chromexcel. I do not like it on boots very much and I really don't like it on jackets personally. The colors are completely unappealing to me and the aging does not impress me.

By an oceanic gulf, I prefer Shinki. In fact, all four of my leather jackets are Shinki. However, I wish someone besides BK would use Badalassi cowhide because I would really love to own a jacket or two in that stunning leather.

With that said, I do understand why people like CXL for jackets even if I don't. @Milesdeathescape you've already ruined your reputation around here with your rudeness. Are you trying to get banned now?

I have it on my best pair of boots and it is indeed incredible. Maybe, but I think part of the problem is that I don't see anyone use it other than BK and they've been sold out of it for at least a year.

My one shinki jacket is mid-weight, has a pretty robust top coat and only now starting to show the tan base along the edging. Badalassi seems a bit of an odd beast. The one sample I saw at Aero was a half belt in a butterscotch HH. It was a really lovely colour but the weight was mental, a throwback to the old CXL steerhide days when people thought that a jacket that required you to bench press 50 kg every day to be able to shoulder its heft.

It was a test jacket, just to see how it came out and they didn't go any further with it. It was a few years ago, pre-Vicenza. It was a butterscotch lovely colour, but quite shiny and a beast of a weight.

As I recall, Aero opted to go with Vicenza instead of Shinki for a 'midweight' horse. The Vicenza I handled didn't in all honesty feel any thinner or less substantial than the FQHH, but it is much more pliable out of the box, and 'wears lighter'. I'd sill trust it for a jacket, though - we're not talking fragile by any means.
